Dear John
question
Why does Nicholas Sparks always use the same items repeatedly?
I can't remember which two books does it, but he writes a romantic scene where they are cooking dinner together and they get too distracted by each other and end up in the bedroom and leave supper untouched, only to be "ravenous" in the morning after multiple bouts of "love making" all night long :) I think the rain scenes and the skipping dinner scenes must seem romantic to him :)

I think Nicholas Sparks writes for production. It's easier to do that if you can just manipulate a few things in a story setting you already have, whether it be on your computer or in your mind than make up an entirely different and original work. He writes to a genre and specific target audience to make money. Thats why he uses the same stuff all the time. In my opinion, he's really not all that creative, but he's smart as hell and a good business man. He weaves a story well and his focus is the characters, not all the other crap, so he just leaves it generally the same.
I'm sure he could write without this formula just fine, he wrote a first novel, but it would take a lot longer, and wouldn't come with a garaunteed movie deal. He writes the books and movie scripts together because he knows the industry will take his stuff. If he starts changing it all the time, it won't be garaunteed anymore.
I've always thought the man was a machine. But this is my opinion on why he keeps to his writing style without adding in anything too over the top. Garaunteed publishing, movie deal, and sales with little risk at this point in his career. When you buy a book by Sparks, you KNOW what you are going to get and in a world where everyone is trying to be original, it's nice find someone reliable.

All of his novels take place in North Carolina and they are all romance except a weekend with my brother written with his brother Micah Sparks.
