I have had difficulty with that in the past. For me, it only seems to work from my desktop computer, not from my Kindle Fire... Don't know why! I will give a try to adding it for you.

Shirley | 4177 comments Thanks Leslie, I see you have amended it now! Next time, I will use the laptop, rather than my kindle fire, as that must have been the problem!

Shirley wrote: "I have tried to set up the group read for The Night Circus but can't do it properly as I've already read this book so it won't let me add it to the bookshelf as "to read", nor can I add the picture..."

No idea of how to do it!!!!

message 155: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Becca and I would like to have another (alternative) October read as the poll was so close. This would mean that The House on the Strand would be set up as another group read for October, if that's ok with the rest of you? It's also because The Night Circus was such a popular book that lots of us have already read it.

message 156: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Shirley, since we've done the same for non-fiction I definitely don't mind. Let's give it a few rounds to see how it goes, if it get's overwhelming at some point we can still change it.

I think it could be easily done and i'd like it!!! I've already read The Night Circus and have no intention of picking it up again, while I don't know DuMarieu's one!!! ;)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Hey guys, as earlier discussed (via e-mail, I am not sure whether all of you have read it) I've changed the group rules regarding our self-promotion policy. Could you please have a look and correct if necessary?

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Good morning everyone ;) Just out of curiousity: when do our next nomination rounds start? It's Fiction and Classics? For someone who wasn't all that fond of polling for everything I am surprisingly overexcited for them now ;)

message 173: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Hi Jenny, I think the nominations for the November fiction read will be in early October - Becca will be doing them again.

message 174: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14361 comments Mod
We are thinking of asking for classic nomination - the read should be in november - by the end of next week. Or right in the middle; let's say the 25th. Then we wanted to have the poll with the titles that were seconded, as for the fiction read.

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

Shirley wrote: "Hi Jenny, I think the nominations for the November fiction read will be in early October - Becca will be doing them again."

Yup fiction nominations will start on the 1st of October and run until the 10th and the poll will open on the 10th/11th and run until the 21st, I think. Are those dates ok with everyone?

message 176: by [deleted user] (new)

Argh, I hadn't seen that whole article by 'Her' until now. I'm just.....ugh. I'm seriously considering taking an extended Goodreads break, I can't deal with that junk on top of everything else I have going on.

message 177: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Deep Breath Becca, it felt like quite a punch yesterday to me as well, but things did move into perspective a bit for me since then. Hope life outside of GR isn't too manic for you at the moment.

As for groupreads: I was just thinking that, especially people living outside of big city environments or people living in non-English speakig countries often have to go through interlibrary loan to get a book which can take a few weeks if they don't want to buy. Allowing them a bit more time to get a book might be nice.

message 178: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments yes, I agree, Jenny, we should give people more time to be able to get hold of the book. Maybe if we start the nominations a bit earlier and then have the poll finished and book chosen by about the 10th, it will give people about 3 weeks' notice

Thanks, I'm going back to Uni next week, so moving back to my own flat. I'm trying to pack, start deciding on my final dissertation topic and look up theories before I start back at Uni and I had a big (ridiculous) argument with my boyfriend haha.

I think I should go to a spa and relax or something, lol.

Btw, Rowena good luck with everything! :) We will see you when you get back - will miss you!

@Becca - I also felt very upset, but Shirley's advice to just ignore it is probably best. Sorry to hear about your fight - sounds like you have a lot of stress right now with moving and school etc :( Spa trip would be nice!

Good point. I think with the classics having 2 months to be read that our schedule should be fine, but if that turns out not to be the case, we can adjust the timing next time around.

I agree, it is Fiction I am more concerned about. Shirley I think your suggestion is good, even mid-month would do probably, but it would give everyone a chance to get the book one way or anohter if they wanted to join.

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Leslie - it was the stupidest argument ever, but just escalated and got a bit out of control, lol.

In terms of Fiction reads, how about this:
Nominations - 30th Sept till 5th Oct
Poll - 5th or 6th Oct till 11th Oct

And then each get 6 days at least and it's done before mid-month :)

Yes, I think that sounds better, Becca. And if people say it's still not enough time, we can always change it next month...

message 185: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Or even running the poll until the 15th...

message 186: by [deleted user] (new)

Also, I think I'm going to set up a Halloween Challenge, if that's ok with everyone?

It'll be one of the challenge box things that show up on the homepage. I'll set up a thread to to explain how it works and stuff and one for discussion - would this be best in the theme challenges folder or shall I set up a 'Seasonal Challenges' folder?

The idea of it will be to challenge yourself to read X books that relate to Halloween or are creepy, gothic etc. I could maybe call it Spooky Booky Challenge or something.

Great! Why don't we start a group or seasonal challenges folder? I like "Spooky Books Challenge" as a name :)

message 189: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 19, 2013 01:31PM) (new)

Ok I'll get the folder set up tomorrow :) I'll open set up the challenge on the 25th or something and it'll start then probably, & run until the 31st Oct or 1st Nov.

Are we agreed with classic nomination to start by the end of this month?
And Becca, it has already been said, but do as we say in Italy "Fregatene"!!!! Which means something like Ret Butler said to Rossella: "Don't give a damm!"
And for us non native speaker: can you explain "Spooky Books Challenge" What is a Spooky book exactly???? Frightening? Spectral?

message 192: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments spooky = relating to, resembling, or suggesting spooks
spooks = ghosts or specters

so your guesses ("frightening", "spectral") are right on the money!

message 193: by [deleted user] (new)

Check it out when you get a chance and let me know what you think!

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments It looks great Becca!

I've posted a link in 'Books in the news' about a collaboration between Guardian, Observer and Waterstones creating a new list of The 100 Best Novels (English language) over the course of the next 100 weeks, each week introducing one of the titles of the list with an essay. As you might have seen, Gill came up with the idea of having a board for it, where each week we post the link and the opportunity to discuss the chosen title. I think it's a great idea and unless any of you strongly objects I'd happily be setting up a board for it. Agreed? The article on it is here

Ha ha Laura, I was trying to change it on my kindle, only to discover it didn't work, so had to wait till I had chance to use the laptop! All sorted now, until I feel like changing it again!
