**Spoilers** - There were a few things unclear to me in this book. I was never sure who killed the black woman. Also, did Malina kill herself in the end? Was she imagining her husband was having affairs or was this real? I loved the book, but wanted others opinions on this.
I believe Malina killed the black woman. We know that Malina is mentally disturbed and until a doctor's care because of the pills she takes to help her sleep, the talk therapy she has had with the doctor, and the coping mechanism (counting and breathing to calm herself). She thinks the woman had an affair with her husband, brings the hammer and kills her. Yes, Malina kills herself in the end, probably using a gun as that is what her husband kept locked up in the garage in the cabinet. She makes reference to knowing where the key is earlier in the book. I don't think we really know if the husband was having affairs, only that if he were it was not with who Malina suspected. My feeling is he was not.
I loved the book too, thought it was a great exploration of that time period.

Mr. Symanski definitely confessed to Grace that he killed his daughter so she would not be alone.
When confronted by Mr. Herze, Malina denies killing the woman of color. In the dark it is possible that she missed. It's been a while since I read this, so I've forgotten.

My impression was that Malina swung at Cassia and missed, then dropped the hammer. Cassia was Mr. Herze's mistress and had a baby girl by him, but the baby died. The other woman in the alley (Tyla) made comments about Cassia pushing around the empty baby carriage, and Cassia picked up the hammer and killed Tyla. Malina breaks down over the course of the book and finally kills herself. Although she was a pretty wretched character, I had some sympathy for her because of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband. Mr. Szymanski killed Elizabeth so that he wouldn't outlive her, leaving her alone. I definitely didn't see that coming! There was some pretty heavy foreshadowing suggesting that Mr Herze might be responsible for Elizabeth's disappearance as well as the twins'.
Nice....I had the same questions. But I am still not clear that Malina killed the black woman. And also, did Mr. Symanski actually say that he had killed his daughter Elizabeth so she wouldn't be the last one?
