S.J. (ladyofwinter) | 4 comments Hello everyone! I found this group while looking for groups near where I live. I am an author and would love to get to know readers as well as other authors in the area. Do you guys ever meet in real life? Or is this group more for social interaction online?

Feel free to drop by any of my online homes to check me out!

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

To answer your question, although a few of us have met in real life, most of the time we usually communicate via this group.

Good luck with your new publication:

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, because of your expressed interest in the Elizabeth/Richard affair here is something I read recently in the book, "The Art of the Personal Essay," by Phillip Logate. It was in an essay by Richard Rodriguez: Elizabeth Taylor, quoted in a magazine article of twenty years ago< spoke of cerulean Richard Burton days on her yacht, days that were nevertheess undermined by the elemental private reflection. This must end. Of course this book was written in 1994and I don't know when the quote by Elizabeth was written; more than twenty years ago I suspect.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I wonder what the meaning of "elemental private reflection" is.

I checked out the GR page for the book you mentioned: The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present.

I found the GR user review of the book (linked below) to be very amusing:

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I have personal friends who are authors; have had at least one book published, some of them several books. I have belonged to this group for years so i value their opinion(by the way, the well known romance writer, Julie Garwood, was once in my writing critique group. In any case the other day three from this group recommended this book to me. Not that I am doing essays at this time, but I have a granddaughter who is trying to write them for her class in college and they thought this would be a good book for her. I perused it and thought it was way too much to digest but I did find some of the essays were entertaining and also some very good suggestions for composing essays were inclluded. I especially liked the essay by Virginia Woolf. 'Nuff said.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, to each his own. Not all books appeal to everyone. I'm tempted to get the book from our library and see it for myself. I've just now requested the book from our library. You've made me curious. :)
