My Paperwhite doesn't have text-to-speech and I'm pretty sure that the base model doesn't have it. My gran's Kindle DX does though, and she uses it quite often (it's infinitely easier on the ears than the iPad that she was using previously).

Alexandra, all the kindle fires are touch screen, knone the less, they have text to speech. they are now the only kindbbes that do. the old kindle keyboard and touch used to have it but unless you can get hold of a referb the fire is now the only one.
pdds i believe the fire also have a voice guide which provides some audio as you navigate around the screen, same as the iphone ipad etc. the difference with the fire is that the voice guide doesn't work with most of the apps unlike apples vertion.
We had to get my gran's Kindle DX (which I believe is still being manufactured) sent from amazon.com. They have a special international delivery option for it, so I don't know why it's not on sale in the UK. http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-DX-Wirel...
Seems to be a step back to me by not having text-to-speech on the new ones. I think a lot of people found it useful not just the visually impaired.I must admit I'm not keen on touch screens and dreading when my keyboard kindle dies.
i agree. Amazon ditched text to speech because they wanted to make the kindles smaller and cheeper and recoving speakers helped with this. that's why it's back on the fire because that already have speakers for music, films etc.

i'd say the same last year but honestly the touch screen is really great.
and i honestly never used my text to speech. i could never get used to the voice.
it's a very individual thing, my wife used to use the text to speech when she was doing the ironing! lol
