Snape hated Harry because he was a "carbon-copy" of James, so it made me wonder- what if Harry had red hair/brown eyes, or a girl with red hair/ brown eyes or black hair/green eyes. Any comments?

I think if Harry was a girl who looked like Lily, Snape would have treated her as his own kid. I don't think he would have tormented her like he did Harry.
It would have changed so many events in the books. What about the Dursleys? Maybe they would have hated 'her' more.

Snape said so in the 'Prince's Tale' himself. But of course Snape couldn't help but see James in him hence the hatred. I think even if he had Lily's features the fact that he was James son would always remain with Snape and there has to be some sort of envy and disgust as had Lily chosen Snape Harry could've been his child.
I think he would still have hated harry. Instead of hating him because he looked like the boy who bullied him/ the guy who married the girl he loved, he would hate harry because he was a reminder of what he lost and a reminder of how lily was gone.

Fatima wrote: "He shall ALWAYS hate harry because harry is the son of James who is the husband of Lily..."Yes but it was also the looks, as I stated up top.
I think that he would still see Harry in the same way because he is Lily's son. That was all that really mattered to him, the green eyes only reminded him of her.
Harry does look mostly like James, but he also has his mother's eyes. This fact, I believe, made Snape tolerate him to the bare minimum. Even if Harry did appear exactly like his father, it still probably would not have changed Snape's decision to redeem himself to Dumbledore. Although perhaps he would have been kinder to Harry had he taken more after his mother, Snape had to put on airs that he despised him consistently, because otherwise his cover would have been blown.
yep and looks wouldn't have change how Harry acted. thus shape would still have all the opportunities to catch him [arrogantly] strutting about the castle just like his father. =)
I don't think he treated Harry the way he did because of hate. He treated Harry like that because in a sick way he was protecting Harry. The wizard world at any moment would and did turn on Harry in an instant. Every thing Snape did he did to toughen him up. I think Snape would of treated his own son the same way. Snape wasn't a lets go have a bowl of ice cream (butter beer) kinda dad figure. He was a make your bed, do your work, no excuses, move out when your 18 kinda guy. We know he loved Harry, J K told Alan Rickman the snape's ending twist when he started playing the character so he could play it that way. If you look back through Alan Rickmans performance you really see that hidden fatherly love in the early movies. J K made sure of that so I doubt he would of treated him differently if Harry looked less like James. Just picture those hard as nails sports coaches that point out flaws to their players. They find something small and use it to get in the players head to harden and modivate them. The players hate the coach all season and at the end when the smoke clears they love and thank the coach(maybe even name their son after him). Looking like James was an easy option for Snape to use, because for Snape looking like James was an insult. Otherwise it would of been anything else that Harry couldn't help but Snape could throw in his face to get his attention. Almost everything Snape picked on Harry with was in one way or another benificial. The over all reaching message to Harry was you are not your legend and after your legend wears off you will be alone and people will turn on you. How many times did our hero feel truely alone. Snape in all his fury was one of Harry's brightest guiding light. And that was by Snape design for so many reasons, less not forget he also had to prove he was on the death eaters side.
I've always wondered this too. Snape doesn't just hate Harry because he looks like James but he acts like James. Maybe if Harry were a bit less arrogant and even less popular Snape may of liked him more.
I think that if Harry had been a girl with red hair, Snape would have treated her less badly. Perhaps not to the point of considering her his own kid or being particularly loving or even showing favoritism towards her, but he would have certainly more humanely than he treated the rest of the Gryffindor students. If for nothing else, because bullying what was essentially a mini-Lily would have provided him with very little emotional gratification, to say the least.
Yes, Snape hated Harry mainly because of his personality. He might look like his dad though but snape would probably still hate him.
He was still James (who he hated) and Lily's (who died because of him) son. Also, he does get away with a lot of stuff that would get any other student in detention hahahh, so I don't think a change of appereance would make Snape treat him differently
I feel like if Harry had been a girl that looked like Lily Snape would have loved her so yeah I do think Harry’s appearance was a sore spot for Snape
Snape was a bitter old man who could not get past his issue with his childhood bully. I don't think he would have changed his views if Harry looked more like Lily or just less like James because I think Harry would always be a reminder that Lily chose James over him. One only needs to look at Snape's treatment of Neville (the boy who could have lost his parents if Voldemort had chosen him, thus could have meant Lily's survival) to see that.
