Moved at the request of Tammy

Hi guys and gals,
As you may have noticed, I challenged group author David P. Forsyth, that if he got 40 different members to post on the thread: New and Active Member Chat, before noon Pacific Time Zone, I would start up a buddy read for his book, Voyage of the Dead.
Much to my surprise, he did it! A deal is a deal & it's my duty to pay up.
The exact date for the buddy read is still being hammered out but I'd like to run the Buddy-Read over the weekend; Friday the 16th, Saturday, Sunday and have any final comments posted by Monday 19th morning. That way we do not get in the way of the group's book of the month (BOTM) reads.
Now, its already been commented that the pace of this read will be rather quick for some, as it is 286 pages long. Divide that by three nights read and you get approximately 96 pgs per reading assignment. I will likely break it up at the end of a chapter, and I haven’t even opened the book yet so I can not tell you where we will stop each day. So the 96 pgs is just an approximation at this time.
However, Buddy reads tend to be a lot quicker then Book of the Month. Also its likely to be less organized in the discussion points. Buddies simply read the section and hammer away at their thoughts regarding that section.
I will have two rules, well three if you count the one just for David P. Forsyth, they are:
1. While all your thoughts (opinions) are welcome, let us be sure to follow the first rule for writing good reviews: Please, Keep the arguments/discussions restricted to books and ideas within the book, don’t attack people (the author and /or in this case your reading buddies).
2. You may join the buddy read at any time of the buddy read you do not have to start off on day one. BUT please do not post comments about the next days reading assignment until midnight, this is to keep from spoiling the read for your fellow buddies.
So for Fridays the 16th’s read do not post until Saturday the 17th any time after 12:00 Am Pacific time zone. After that time everyone should have voiced their thoughts and gotten the new reading schedule. Note: If we have a lot of buddies then I will create a new thread for each day’s thoughts about the previous nights read.
3. This applies only to David P. Forsyth, Stay out of the chat! Shh up and let us read /post our thoughts, until Monday morning. On Monday you can come in and say whatever you want. Tell us we drink too much and chat too long , or vise versa. But stay out of the buddy readers way. We need to be able to say what we think, without worrying if you will be offended. I will do my best to keep this about the book and I am sure Jim and Elizabeth will be watching. But dude, you agreed to the buddy read and I told you straight up, I do not give (nor believe in giving) fluff reviews. Cedric is my dear friend, but even he never got five stars for that. Keep in mind, that just because one reader/reviewer thinks something does not mean everyone will agree, Right? An opinion is just that, an opinion.
So if you are wanting to join me in the buddy read, please post your name here. If this is too quick for you and you would like to wait for another Buddy Read or Book of the Month, there will be no hard feelings.
As I made the deal with David, I fully intend to honor it, I will do the buddy read, even if I am the only one posting.

You can always take your Kindle with you and comment later :) By the way, I saw a few posts on other threads saying they were worried that a weekend read was too much for them. Well, you can always get a head start and hold your comments, but I could also refer you to numerous reviews from people who say they consumed the book in one or two sittings. For example:

"What a truly entertaining read. I started reading on Friday morning and couldn't put the book down until I finished. Not just your everyday, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum story of the apocalypse." -- Paul Jones, author of "Extinction Point" and "Towards Yesterday"

And group member Randy said, "Loved the book. I almost read it in one sitting, except that it was 4am and I had to go to bed. Now I've got to wait for the second book..."
Now Randy is considering reading it for the FOURTH time? Is he crazy???

That is not to say that YOU will like it as much as they did -- not everyone does -- but if you get into it, the weekend reading schedule shouldn't deter you. :)

Now I think I am supposed to shut up and let you all dissect, digest, and regurgitate my book like raw meat on Z-Day... I just wanted to encourage you to join this challenge Buddy Read.

Cheers and Bon Voyage!
David P. Forsyth

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) It's getting close guys and gals.
I will open the buddy read thread late Thursday night or Early Friday morning.
Remember this will be a quick read.
I plan to break it into three reading sections that I will break down for you in the initial post.

The first reading section should be read on Friday the 16th. Please hold off making your post on that section until no earlier then Saturday the 17th right at midnight (Pacific standard time).

The second section should be read on Saturday 17th Please hold off making your post on that section until after 6PM on that same day (Saturday 17th) Pacific standard time.

The final section can be read at your pleasure, BUT this one you will be allowed to make your post anytime after 11:30 AM Pacific standard time on Sunday the 18th.

Because the second BOTM starts up Monday, it would be good (but not required) if we could close this down by Monday evening 8 PM Pacific standard time.

I do not plan to make this a formal discussion format.

Anyone who is in the buddy read , can offer up questions and/or list any points of interests that they would like to chat about with the group.
The idea here is to talk about our reading experience.
Almost anything is fair game provided it is about the book or ideas within the book.

Anyone who has read the book and would like to post their thoughts on the book but not participate in the buddy read, Please wait until all the buddies have posted their comments on the last reading section or anytime on Sunday Afternoon, let's say 4 PM Pacific standard time (which ever comes sooner).
At that time, you (the non-buddy read participate who has read the book) can can offer up any questions and/or list any points of interests that they would like to chat about with the group.

David, No more comments please. Stay out until Monday Morning, a deal is a deal.

I hope this is an enjoyable experience for us all.
Respectfully,
T.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Does that sound right to you all?

First section you have all day/night to read and a window of 12 Am to 6 PM (18 hours) to post your thoughts.
The second you will have all day Saturday (and night if you need it) but you can post your thoughts from 6 PM Saturday to 11:30 AM Sunday that gives you 17.5 hours window period to post your comments.
The last reading section you will have from the time you finish reading/posting on Saturdays section until Sunday morning to read it, but can post as early as 11:30 AM until 4PM before outside voices join in.
However you can choose to take your time reading the last section as long as you post your final thoughts by Monday at 8 PM.
That gives you 33 hours to make your final posts.
I am asking those who will be joining this buddy read, if this is a good amount of time between the reading and posting of comments?

J. Michel (JCornellMichel) | 24 comments That sounds great, Tammy! I cheated and already started reading Voyage of the Dead this morning (I'm like a kid peeking at their Christmas presents). I won't post my comments until Saturday at midnight though. Thanks for organizing this buddy read!

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Hi J,
I will post the reading sections in about 30 min or so.
I was trying to wait to give your BOTM readers a chance to wrap up their thoughts, before I encouraged them to open up the book and get busy reading so we could talk about the book.
Also I was trying to squeeze in two short stories in
John G. Hartness Bubba the monster hunter series before I started Voyage of the Dead. I really enjoy that series. The more of them I read the more I wish that the author would release it in volumes, because taken individually the shorts read choppy but when you read a couple together the bigger picture of the series is five star good in my views. Yet I've not given any of the shorts more than four stars....oops I'm off topic (per normal) I blame Randy for that!
Anyway, i plan on reading it in as close to one sitting as possible, stopping at the reading breaks to make notes on my thoughts so that I can avoid spoilers.
So let me go warm up my desktop and I'll get the buddy read thread going.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Mod.
Please close this thread. We will be using the active buddy read thread to post comments on this book.
This thread was just the buddy read request and sign up thread.
Since we are now on the buddy read itself, this thread is dead.
