Arielle Rae Aguilar | 126 comments I borrow a lot of books out of the public library even though I know that I would never finish them all before they are due... So I usually have piles and piles of books and I always have such a hard time trying to decide what to read next! How do you choose what to read next? Do you just close your eyes and just pick randomly? Or do something like eenie meenie miny mo?

bookel | 4018 comments Books out of the public library, piles around, plus books of my own to read, likewise! When I don't finish in time I make a note of the page number I'm up to and if I want to finish it, borrow again at a later date (or ask for it to be checked in then reborrowed if no one has a hold on it, or go pick it up off the shelf if it's been shelved). I tend to read multiple books at once, and pick up what I feel like reading at the moment, and it may be multiple books in the same week. Not as much finishing one book before reading another like I used to, though some books grab and divert my attention and if they're a quick read, I finish them before continuing on reading the rest. I don't pick randomly, don't do eenie meenie miny mo either.

Magda | 14 comments I keep to my kindle, so I have no due date problem :) I just put lots of books on it and when the time comes I'm choosing the title that fits best to my current mood. If my mood changes or I simply don't like current book, I might switch it.

I do have a pile (or rather few piles and shelves etc) of paper books waiting to be read or finished. Sometimes I reach for these too :) but it's always rather random, no reading patters. Even with series. I pick up one book in series, love it and still - I might not read the second part right away even if I own it.

Caroline (caro7) It's helped me to see what GR friends have read/are reading, honestly. Otherwise, I often will read the first few sentences of a book on my TBR, and if they grab me, that will be the book I read next. [Usually I'm in the mood for a specific genre (non-fiction, literary fiction, YA, fantasy, true crime, etc.), so that narrows down the choices.] Sometimes it's hard, and it IS just eenie meenie miney mo!

I also found being a part of this group to be really helpful (haven't participated in a while, though):

Other times I just pick whatever book that I am suddenly in the mood for.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Well, I always use my brain to help me make decisions. My brain is always with me, you see. Decision-making is fairly instantaneous. Then, once the decision is made; I usually stick with whatever it decided on.

ladymurmur | 30 comments For me it is very much like deciding what I want to have for dinner. What am I hungry for? What do I feel like? What suits my mood? Are there leftovers (library books) I need to finish before they expire?

I often have multiple books in progress at once. Now that I have my kindle, I can have all of them with me all the time, and switch between them at will!

Participating in various groups here on GoodReads also can influence my decision - is there a group read I want to join in on? A title I need to complete a challenge?

You can also set your "to-read" shelf here at GR to the randomize setting. Kind of cool.

This is not reliable: what are you going to do when aliens steal your brain?

I always have one fiction and one nonfiction book going at the same time, so if one starts to bore me I can turn to the other.

I own several hundred books I haven't read yet, so those are always available to me. Plus we have a really good library in town and I go there fairly often, always armed with a long to-read list of books.

But mainly I just turn to what I feel like at the moment. I go through long stretches where things that used to interest me don't anymore (but they will at some point in the future). I don't usually read a bunch of mysteries in a row, I'll alternate mysteries with some other genre. I probably wouldn't read two enormous old classics back to back, as I like to vary things. I never read the same author back-to-back, and I'm not the type of reader who wants to get through an author's entire oeuvre in one year, for example. That always feels like overkill to me. I need to space it out.

Lately I've been on a Third Reich/Holocaust/Hitler binge.

Occasionally I participate in the group read of whatever group I'm in, although I don't do this all that often because what they decide to read doesn't match my mood. I have to be in the mood.

Clover (bibliophilic-fae) | 22 comments Personally, I just listen to the books and read the descriptions. If I need to read one, it calls to me. (I'm so weird, I know.)

I am the same way! That is also why I barely join group reads, unless I hear the call. There are those books you start reading, but sometimes they tell me after a few pages "No, you are not ready."
I also like the food analogy. When you crave certain foods, you might need something they contain. It's the same way with books. And at times I crave some Junk Food/Book, like a Mills&Boon Romance, and I get nearly the same feeling as I do after eating a bag of chips.
