I do have a pile (or rather few piles and shelves etc) of paper books waiting to be read or finished. Sometimes I reach for these too :) but it's always rather random, no reading patters. Even with series. I pick up one book in series, love it and still - I might not read the second part right away even if I own it.

I also found being a part of this group to be really helpful (haven't participated in a while, though):

Other times I just pick whatever book that I am suddenly in the mood for.

I often have multiple books in progress at once. Now that I have my kindle, I can have all of them with me all the time, and switch between them at will!
Participating in various groups here on GoodReads also can influence my decision - is there a group read I want to join in on? A title I need to complete a challenge?

You can also set your "to-read" shelf here at GR to the randomize setting. Kind of cool.

This is not reliable: what are you going to do when aliens steal your brain?

I always have one fiction and one nonfiction book going at the same time, so if one starts to bore me I can turn to the other.
I own several hundred books I haven't read yet, so those are always available to me. Plus we have a really good library in town and I go there fairly often, always armed with a long to-read list of books.
But mainly I just turn to what I feel like at the moment. I go through long stretches where things that used to interest me don't anymore (but they will at some point in the future). I don't usually read a bunch of mysteries in a row, I'll alternate mysteries with some other genre. I probably wouldn't read two enormous old classics back to back, as I like to vary things. I never read the same author back-to-back, and I'm not the type of reader who wants to get through an author's entire oeuvre in one year, for example. That always feels like overkill to me. I need to space it out.
Lately I've been on a Third Reich/Holocaust/Hitler binge.
Occasionally I participate in the group read of whatever group I'm in, although I don't do this all that often because what they decide to read doesn't match my mood. I have to be in the mood.

I am the same way! That is also why I barely join group reads, unless I hear the call. There are those books you start reading, but sometimes they tell me after a few pages "No, you are not ready."
I also like the food analogy. When you crave certain foods, you might need something they contain. It's the same way with books. And at times I crave some Junk Food/Book, like a Mills&Boon Romance, and I get nearly the same feeling as I do after eating a bag of chips.
