Katie | 5 comments The first story involved a boy who had to take food to his neighbor. I think the woman was blindfolded or kept her eyes closed because she was afraid to looks at anything. POSSIBLE SPOILERS I think it ended with the woman telling the boy not to look too hard at anything because faces/creatures lie in everything the clouds, the ground, the wallpaper etc. If they catch sight of you they will never let you go/leave you alone.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Do you remember when you read this book, or when it was published? Were the stories all by the same author or different authors? About how many stories were in this collection? Remember anything about the cover?

message 3: by Katie (new)

Katie | 5 comments I think it was a collection of stories by different authors. I think that H.P. Lovecraft was one. It may have been published in the 90's.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Oh, one more question. How thick was the book? How many pages; was it a huge anthology?

message 5: by Katie (new)

Katie | 5 comments I think it was 400 pages.

Katie | 5 comments Thanks :D

E4 | 6 comments I've definitely read the same story, and I think it was in a horror compilation. Did the woman paint her walls white and cover up all the cracks? I remember the main point of the plot being that each time you saw "them" they got a little bit closer. They were so close to her that if she ever saw them again they would take her.

Unfortunately I can't think of the title.

I remember two other stories associated with that one but they could have just been stories I read around the same time.

One is about some kind of talent show or singing contest or something where two parents produce machine like perfect children year after year.

The other is about a man who chews newspaper compulsively and ends up making a nest inside of his girlfriend like a wasp.

Do those sound familiar?

O.M.G. Did she survive?

message 10: by E4 (new)

E4 | 6 comments It's kind of ambiguous but yes she's actually alive. He sort of builds the nest out of her and she becomes like a flesh hive -.-

Me too!!

Were the stories all by different people? It sounds kind of like something by Brian Evenson.

Katie, are you still looking for this collection or did you find it?

Nóinín (fagurfifill) | 168 comments Hi Katie,
your story is most certainly “Details“ by China Miéville.

@E4: The second and third ones could be “Little Dead Girl Singing“ by Stephen Gallagher and “Nesting Instincts“ by Brian Hodge respectively.

All three can be found in Best New Horror 14 (The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror, #14) by Stephen Jones
