And for that they have to make the people come alive. I have to get into their head.
Well, currently we live in three places and have bookshelves in all of them, but now I have switched to audiobooks and kindle! And my kids HAVE to start taking books, the problem is that one discovers each of us wants to read different books!!!! You begin to wonder what the point a private library is!
Almeta wrote: "Finished Stardust. Started A Dog's Purpose, apparently to round out my POV of a dog collection!☺

Have you gone to the dogs, Almeta? :)
I am well in to The Cuckoo's Calling and am really enjoying the characters, plot and the mystery. I think I know who did it but I still am not 100% why. Wonder if I am right even on who did it. (Am about 70% through and have stayed with same suspect since about half way through)
Now I am listening to The Murder of the Century: The Gilded Age Crime that Scandalized a City and Sparked the Tabloid Wars. It is non-fiction and very exciting. For me true crime is better than fictional!I just finished Anil's Ghost and by the end I liked it a lot, but not in the beginning. Ondaatje isn't the easiest author to follow. His books always hop all over the place, but he can write beautifully, and he gets you thinking.
My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I am currently reading
The Paris Wife I am reading for another GR book club; Wolf Hall I am reading for the September challenge since I had started it earlier in the summer and generally go for any Tudor period reads but I just didn't get very far and never went back to it; and Drift I have been meaning to finish but got carried away in the world of fiction and madness for a while...
I hope to start
for this month's group read as soon as it comes in...but then again, I'm sure many of us are either reading it or planning to.
I finished reading The Supernaturals: A Ghost Story last night in the wee witching hours. I give my head a shake sometimes. As I crawled into bed I was thinking, "It's dark, it's really late, you're alone and you just finished a scary story! Silly woman!"I'm in the middle of Pirate Latitudes and am starting a reread of Dark Places. This is for a group read with Debra's group.
Well, i am rereading 1984 (still) and my Q book. I have Pirate Latitudes and 7 Days, from the library but it is all on hold as I got my hands on Cold Days, The perfect vacation read IMO. So i am off to Dresden land....
Started Mistborn: The Final Empire I thought maybe some form of royalty may pop up but don't think I'm gonna get that lucky with this one
Travis of NNY wrote: "Started Mistborn: The Final Empire I thought maybe some form of royalty may pop up but don't think I'm gonna get that lucky with this one"Read this a while back. I cannot recall if the "nobility" had titles. But i liked it.
Shakespeare's Landlord, by Charlaine Harris. I found this book on the listopia section here on goodreads. I love goodreads!
Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. I have never been a Hemingway fan but this was published posthumously about his time in Paris from 1921-26 and includes tender memories of his first wife, Hadley (the narrator in The Paris Wife). Curious interest made me want to read this.

Now I am reading A Good House just because and its totally different than the last couple of books.
Finished The Murder of the Century: The Gilded Age Crime that Scandalized a City and Sparked the Tabloid WarsMy review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Now listening to The Walking People.
Wendy wrote: "Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. I read it all but it was not fun!
Jeweliej wrote: "Shakespeare's Landlord, by Charlaine Harris. I found this book on the listopia section here on goodreads. I love goodreads!"I'm listening to this at the moment Jeweliej - about 75% through - it's quite a fun book I think.
I have just finished reading The Rose Garden which I loved. I had chosen it for the Royalty challenge but no royalty unfortunately turned up (although they were mentioned a lot) so I will have to make another choice to satisfy that challenge. So while I think about that, I have started reading The Graveyard Book.
I finished Pirate Latitudes for our group/buddy read. I started Wolf Hall this morning for the Royalty challenge. It's heavy, that book is! I could build up some arm muscles lifting it. LOL!
Wendy wrote: "Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. I have added A Movable Feast to go with it as well. Thanks!
Pam wrote: "Wendy wrote: "Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. I have never been a Hemingway fan but this was published posthumously about his time in Par..."You might check out The Old Man and the Sea. This has always been a favorite of mine.
Then you will have to see the movie with the same name starring Spencer Tracey. :D
I've decided to join this thread with fear in my heart. I just KNOW my TBR list is going to grow and grow. I already added one Janice read and recommended here and I just HAD to get it NOW.Anyway, I just finished a really good crime thriller Cemetery Lake: A Thriller by Paul Cleave. Boy did the PI in this story get in deep water, no pun intended. It was a great page-turner and I'm going to read the next in the series Collecting Cooper: A Thriller.
Now I'm reading a book in another great series for those people who love a good mystery, love books and especially love collecting rare and first editions. In this Bookman series who get the inside view to the collector's and rare bookseller's worlds from the point-of-view of an ex-cop turned bookseller. I'm reading #3 in the series: The Bookman's Promise by John Dunning. I really like this series.
Oh, and I almost forgot I'm reading a 800+ page tome about my new Iphone4 called Iphone 4 Made Simple. I've read through about 100 pages of instructions and tips and am learning how cool my already outdated new phone is!
I finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane for my ABC challenge. I thought it was ok and gave it 3 stars. Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...I am now starting Petite Mort which is another ABC challenge book. This was a complete impulse buy for me so I am looking forward to seeing what it is like.

Finished reading The Power of One and it lived up to everybody's words. Hope to finish The Husband's Secret over the weekend and continue to listen to Rose Harbor in Bloom although I won't have too much listening time over this weekend.
Debra wrote: "I've decided to join this thread with fear in my heart. I just KNOW my TBR list is going to grow and grow. There were about 150 titles culled from the list.
Which book? The Supernaturals?
I'm at Almeta's for the day and staying the night. She just finished A Hell of a Woman and I'm still reading The Bookman's Promise. We had some yummy plum wine and plan on having Angus burgers for dinner. I'm doing the cooking this time. Just a lazy rainy day here in SE Michigan.
I finished
. O my goodness. I had a hard time giving it 1 star. I picked it up on Amazon for free thinking it would be fun. Dorothy goes back to save Oz. The only good thing about it was that it was free.
Cherie wrote: "Wendy wrote: "Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. Its evident from reading A Moveable Feast that McClain (author of The Paris Wife) really tried to include as much factual groundwork as she could in order to fully flesh out her Hadley and their relationship. I really enjoyed this book and her writing.
I read The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom The Bell Tolls in high school and college, respectively and do recall enjoying his writing and the narration in TOMATS but I can't remember how I felt about FWTBT. I can say that salacious details (read: gossip) aside, I don't care for A Moveable Feast - though it is nice to see he is more generous to Hadley here.
Pam wrote: "Wendy wrote: "Fresh on the heels of The Paris Wife, I stopped at the library to pick up A Moveable Feast. May skip it though since it seems it is centered on the more self-indulgent, ego-maniacal characters in that bunch. My friend recommended
which is a fictionalized account from the perspective of Zelda Fitzgerald (and I was told she was not a fan of Hem either), so that will probably be my cheat read since Wolf Hall is doing a good job of putting me to sleep at night.

Janice wrote: "Have you gone to the dogs, Almeta? :)"Yep, I thought I was done but apparently not!
I just finished A Dog's Purpose and Fluke and Lost And Found is on its way!
Seeee? How can I be expected to read the alphabet challenge in order? I can't even read the books that I declared that I was starting without being distracted!☻Finished A Dog's Purpose, A Hell of a Woman, Fluke, Calling Invisible Women and Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings .
NOW I'm starting A Dark-Adapted Eye for ABC.
I think.☻
Moving right along Mistborn: The Final Empire starting this book was a bad idea now I have to read the rest of this trilogy and probably many more books by Brandon Sanderson
Travis of NNY wrote: "More king right along Mistborn: The Final Empire starting this book was a bad idea now I have to read the rest of this trilogy and probably many more books by Brandon Sanderson"He he. Sanderson got me too. IMO, the 1st one is the best. And do not miss The Alloy of Law which takes place in the same world, but way later in the timeline. It is like a victorian western (not a typo), and a lot of fun.
Nancy wrote: "There are far better books by Anita Shreve IMO than The Pilot's Wife IMO."I think I agree Nancy. Am debating dropping The Pilot's Wife. At least the narrator's voice suits Anne.
OK, How lame am I? I thought I was listening to The Pilot's Wife for the past 10 6 hours or so (when I am running) but apparently I am actually listening to The Aviator's Wife. That's what happens when you don't have a hard copy book with a cover in your hands.I am still debating this one but I just checked and it sounds like it may pick up soon.
Shannon wrote: "I am actually listening to The Aviator's Wife. ...I am still debating this one but I just checked and it sounds like it may pick up soon. ..."
I enjoyed it. Here's Almeta's Review
I'm reading A Hell of a Woman because my sister, Almeta, told me to and because she is confused about the ending and wants my input! Like I need ANOTHER book to commit to!
Shannon wrote: "OK, How lame am I? I thought I was listening to The Pilot's Wife for the past 10 6 hours or so (when I am running) but apparently I am actually listening to The Aviator's Wife. That's what happens ..."I wasn't interested in this book but that's just me. I did read another book by this author and wasn't all that impressed either. My motto is ditch the book - there are so many out there you will love soooooooo.
Debra wrote: "I'm reading A Hell of a Woman because my sister, Almeta, told me to and because she is confused about the ending and wants my input! Like I need ANOTHER book to commit to!"ROFL! Sisters! My sister keeps teasing me with books that she says she's going to give to me, and then never does.
I read 100 pages in Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones yesterday and decided I needed a break. My library wants Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children back tomorrow and I am determined not to take another book back without reading it. I could not put it down and read until 3:00am this morning. I only have 71 pages left until the end.
I'm really not sure what I want to read - I have one book which I should reread for my f2f book group next week and then lots of books for challenges both on my Kindle and from the library to say nothing about reserved books which came in recently. Right now I'm watching the tennis match and will think about this later.
I did finish both my listening book, Rose Harbor in Bloom which was too predictable and just ok and also finished The Husband's Secret which was a really good read and will most likely be on my top ten list for 2013
In addition to the noir book I'm reading in paperback, I'm listening to the audiobook The Ocean at the End of the Lane while commuting to and from work and such. Neil Gaiman has such a yummy voice... I'm enchanted with him and the story, so far.
I am now rereading What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank by Nathan Englander for my F2F book group. I loved this book the first time I read it but I really need to remember everything when I go to this book group sooooooooo
