The Beach House and I'm not liking it very much so far. I thought it was some fluffy fun-to-read chick-lit. I've read Jane Green books before and liked them enough to read another one. I started it yesterday on the train and I'm about 20% through, but I find the writing style annoying, the stories cliche and I can't relate to the marital problems of the middle-aged people in the book. And the characters annoy me too, a bit. I've decided to read until they all go to the beach house from the title, hopefully it will get better from there, but if not, I'm going to read something else.

I finished Heart-Shaped Box for this month's theme read. I gave it 3 stars because I enjoyed it but not as much as I hoped I would. I liked it enough to want to read some more of his books but I am not sure if I will pick this one up again in the future. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm back on track with the alphabet, finished P, The Periodic Table and about to start Q, The Queen's Sorrow.
I have just started reading Vurt for my alphabet challenge. I'm also still listening to Elantris but I'm hoping to finish that this weekend while cleaning the house so that I can start listening to the November group read The Black Dahlia.
Read Ghost Story for the Group Read. Also read Farewell, My Lovely and Gone With a Handsomer Man for the ABCs.
and Babette's Feast and Other Anecdotes of Destiny just for grins.
The next Alphabet book is Heart-Shaped Box which I am also reading for the Stephen King Recommends group read.
Finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Kitchen House and both were good. I also finished a cozy mystery Two to Mango which had a good mystery and is number 2 in this series but I am finding the characters are getting a little tedious as they are all rude and drinking too much and really treat each other dismally so this will be the last in this series for me (even if it is set on Kauai). I am now reading Seraphina because it was on my kobo and was one of the few that hadn't expired (which means I must have bought it at some point in time! lol). It is actually quite interesting so far and I am thinking it is a YA or middle school read but we'll see.
A quick graphic novel Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned I have a feeling I will be reading the whole series
Shannon, how do books expire on kobo? Is there some kind of library you can use? Or is it through your own library?

Was Phillip Marlow the detective that Captain Picard was always playing on the Holodeck?
Cherie wrote: "Was Phillip Marlow the detective that Captain Picard was always playing on the Hollowdeck?..."lol!
That would be Dixon Hill, a character supposedly read about in (the real) Amazing Detectives Stories Magazine.
Dixon Hill is only a Star Trek invention, and probably used the magazine's detective, Nick Carter, as a model. But really Phillip Marlow, Race Williams, Sam Spade could have had their influence too.
The first Star Trek/Dixon Hill episode, "The Big Goodbye", is probably a reference to "The Big Sleep" or "The Long Goodbye" both with Chandler's Philip Marlowe character.
Ah, yes. Dixon Hill... that comes back to me now. He was not real? I thought he was really from literature not made up for Star Trek. I loved those episodes.
They are playing Star Trek Next Generation episodes on the BBC cable channel every day. I usually "INFO" them when I have nothing else to watch and do not want to read at the moment. (I know I should not be admitting to it here...)
Did you Google all of this, or are you a Trekkie?
Cherie wrote: "Did you Google all of this, or are you a Trekkie? ..."Really I'm am old generation Trekkie. But definitely a Detective Pulp fiction fan.
My grandmother collected, among other bizarre things, Amazing Detectives Stories Magazines and similar lurid covers. When I visited her, I occupied my time with her old collections.
Or by listening to the radio. (No TV.)
Amazing Detectives Stories Magazines was the "instigator" of the detective radio show narrated by the deep voiced man...
"The Shadow Knows."

And my wife will thank you in advance (not) for getting me started once again on the shadow

I've read the third book and enjoyed it. I want to read the first two. Now I'm wondering.
I am reading The Silent Wife. My husband, who thinks he's funny, asked if it was a "How To" book? I just said yes! :)
I finished Death Cloud which was a bit too YA for my tastes. I won't continue that series.I've now started The Potato Factory because it's next audiobook on the list to read.
I have The Potato Factory on my audio shelf too. 23 hours would be the longest book I've listened to. I will wait to read your review Janice- seems quite the commitment . :)
I seem to be reading the long books lately.. Speaks the Nightbird was 30 hours, and The Power of One. ARGH... no wonder I'm not getting anywhere in terms of meeting my challenges.

@ The Shadow Knows... I know about the radio show, but I do not think I have ever heard it. Too funny, Travis.By the way, did anyone listen to the 75th anniversary broadcast of the original "War of the Worlds"? I have it on my iPod. George Tekei posted a link to it on FB. I heard it once in high school. My world history teacher played it for us one year.
I have finished two audiobooks. One I loved: American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The other was just OK, although is is supposedly a classic: The Case of Comrade Tulayev

Now I am listening to Ride With Me, Mariah Montana. It is kind of cute, but really I am getting a bit bored...... Series rarely work for me.
currently reading
becasue i really enjoyed monster high and i've been watchig ever after high on youtube and its really fun, and i need something light hearted after a month of horror stories
I am currently falling asleep on The Blinding Knife, my W book. (The book's great, I blame the time zones that shortened my sleep). As i do not want to lug around this thick book, i started Midnight Riot for the Monthly Challenge. In audio, I just finished Where'd You Go, Bernadette, fun audio! Next is The Black Dahlia
I've got The Emperor of All Maladies
by Siddhartha Mukherjee on my Kindle. That one's a buddy read. On my iPod (lots of listening with my daily commute), I have The Master and Margarita
by Mikhail Bulgakov for one of my challenges.
I finished it but never really got my attention to where I can't even remember anything about Master and Margarita and that was a few months agoaybe needs a reread
Travis, I think it may be one of those quirky books you need to be in the mood for in order to enjoy it. I'd started to listen to it one morning a week or two ago, but quickly decided it wasn't working and moved on to another. Still, I'd gotten it to fit one of my challenges and decided to give it another chance this morning. Today was a different day, and I know I'll listen through this time.
Esther wrote: "As i do not want to lug around this thick book, i started Midnight Riot for the Monthly Challenge. "I hope you enjoy it Esther. I really liked it. I have the second book in the series on my kindle read.
I am starting Possession: A Romance
for the November Top Ten challenge.I am also continuing with The Woman in White
which I am really enjoying so far.

Well, it is too early to tell, but I like the tone so far.
Theresa and Travis, I really enjoyed The Master and Margarita. I was very hesitant before I started it; I rarely enjoy fantasy, but this book does the fantasy marvelously and there is so very much about life in Russia. It is very important to get a version with copious notes. Sometimes I got sick of reading all the notes, but actually you much better understand the numerous details of book if you read at least a portion of them. I don't know how the notes are dealt with in the audio version though.
Chrissie wrote: "Theresa and Travis, I really enjoyed The Master and Margarita. In the past couple of days I've read
and
. Liked them both. The first is quite clever, and if you like Flynn, this is good for you. I've never read anything by Fannie Flagg but this was delightful. Now I'm looking for a W book for my alphabet. Time to go through my TBR.
My review of The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion: A Novelhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I am reading The Woman in White as a buddy read, I've almost finished and I have really enjoyed it. I just fancied reading The Secret History so I started that tonight. And I am still 700 pages into The Wise Man's Fear because I don't want it to end. I'm a really happy reader at the moment. :)

That's fine with me :) I put them both on hold.
I'm reading
since I'm on a bit of a graphic novel kick lately and I'm still reading
and really enjoying it.
I have a couple books going right now. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald for my alphabetStill Foolin' 'Em: Where I've Been, Where I'm Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys?- for the challenge
Unwind- for a buddy read in another group.
The next Alphabet book, Heart-Shaped Box which I am also to read for the Stephen King Recommends group has not arrived yet.I am listening to The Shadow of the Wind as a re-read. Want to refresh my memory of all three books, close together in time.

Darren bought me Heart Shaped Box for our first Christmas together lol :) I still have to read it. It's funny to think that not many people know Joe Hill is Stephen King's son.
Kimberly wrote: " I still have to read it. It's funny to think that not many people know Joe Hill is Stephen King's son. ..."I think that they are catching on. Especially after the release of NOS4A2.
I'm really looking forward to starting Heart-Shaped Box.
What do you think of Watchmen?
It's really good, I like how well adapted the movie is compared to what I've read of it so far. I'm about 1/4 of the way through and I'm blown away by it. I love the artwork as well.
Esta wrote: "And I am still 700 pages into The Wise Man's Fear because I don't want it to end. That's good to hear Esta! I can't wait to start reading it in December. You'll have to join in the discussion with us on the Buddy Read!
Just finished reading Vurt for my alphabet. Going to stick with my alphabet and read Wool Omnibus now.
Eeeek!I just analyzed my books for the rest of the year, and am, myself, going to need analysis.☻
To complete at least the second task in the Alphabet Challenge, my Countdown Challenge, my Other-Worldly Challenge AND December's Group Read and Challenge, I will need to read 42 books by the end of the year.
Which will also just barely squeak by my 2013 Goodreads Challenge goal.
