Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Jane Eyre and here is my review, for what it is worth. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

@ Helen - Thank you for pushing me into reading it again!
@ Marnie - You should read it!
@ Rusalka - I liked your review and agree about how much Mr. Rochester talked sometimes.
@ Janice - Sorry to politely disagree.

I liked Jane Eyre better, but as similar as the elements of the two stories are, they are all completely different characters. The language of the two different stories are so unique to each too, because of when they were written.

edited to add: Oh, and I forgot - Mr. Rochester was a Vulcan! I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read that'

Yes! I still agree. He makes me feel like he's trying to fill the empty space and just keeps talking. Like me in uncomfortable situations really.

Kimberly | 2033 comments I finished The Mammy by Brendan O'Carroll and loved it. Agnes Browne is a hoot!
Now I've picked A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin up again or the first time since July and I'm starting The Chisellers by Brendan O'Carroll .

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments After starting and deciding the time wasn't right a while ago the mood struck me to roll up my sleeves and finish War and Peace. Actually beginning to enjoy it this time around. On a side note I always wonder why someone decided to put reply and flag side by side as I am often clicking flag by accident luckily there are questions to answer which gives me a chance to exit before just randomly flagging people.

No, you said that you still preferred Rebecca after reading Jane Eyre. :o)

I DO agree with your comments about Charlotte Bronte and Jane's character though. I felt the power struggle in the story, although I do not think it was just between men and women. It was against right and wrong - and about hurting and forgiving. And yes, there was all of the sermonizing too, which I did not care for, but could overlook.

I guess the difference, for me, WAS the character of Jane over the young Mrs. de Winter.

The series keeps getting more and more intricate, I love the story telling.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just finished Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I can focus all my attention on The Name of the Wind. I took up crocheting a while ago, and I have to say that my average-book-reading-speeded has dropped considerably. Especially since I actually started trying to create an owl!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I just finished This House is Haunted for my ghost story read of the month. I really wanted to love it, but it just sort of fell a little flat for me. It was well-written with one good main character, but I just didn't find it all that scary. It did have a few creepy scenes. I think I'm going to give it a 3 rating.

I read this earlier on in the year Debra. I enjoyed it, I thought it was well written and I too liked the heroine but I agree that it wasn't as scary as I hoped. It felt more like a psychological thriller than actual ghost story. However, I enjoyed other aspects enough to give it a 4 star rating.

message 772: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments In my review I said I'd have given it 3.5 stars. If it had been scarier, I would have definitely gone for 4 stars. Boyne is a good writer.

Reliquary was very good, I knew I was going to like it but the fact that I liked it just as much as I did Relic surprised me.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm current reading The Arrivals and I have no idea how it got on my TBR list. It only has 3.30 rating on GR and none of my friends have read it. I'm finally getting into it after a slow start and it's better than I expected. Great concept, although Stephen King visited a similar concept much more thoroughly and masterfully in his Dark Tower series.

message 787: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Going to have to get Relic what with everyone's recommendations I think!

message 788: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Still reading The Name of the Wind. It took me a while to get into, about 70-80 pages. I'm not sure if it's because of the book or because I didn't have much time to read since I started it. I have more time now, I'm at page 140 and really enjoying it and want to read on and on and on.

message 789: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I was on the road for 13 hours this weekend so started and finished Heart-Shaped Box. I also started Death Cloud. I acquired this freebie from SYNC this summer. I heard that people lost their downloads on Overdrive when they upgraded their iPads to IOS 7. It's the only title I have on Overdrive, so thought I would listen to it and then upgrade.

message 791: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments I just finished up with the alphabet and am now planning to dive into a couple thick novels that I have been dying to get to.

Starting: Judas Unchained which is the second half of an epic series about humans discovering another intelligent race that is very violent. This story has been beautifully written so far and I can't wait to see how it all ends. I'm also starting The Forge of Darkness which is the first book in a planned trilogy which is set in the same world as the Malazan Book of the Fallen series (ten books) which is tied with A Song of Ice and Fire as my favorite fantasy series.

Also reading The Golden Apples of the Sunwith my wife so that I can introduce her to wonderful Ray Bradbury

Sarah | 18550 comments Just finished reading Un Lun Dun which was totally crazy but I liked it. Now on to something based in reality with Thicker Than Water which is the latest instalment in the Jessica Daniels series - it was released last week. Thought I'd have a brief break from my alphabet.

Both very enjoyable and pretty quick reads as well. Warning though once you start the Dresden files you may not be able to stop the series.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Travis, I've enjoyed all the books written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, especially their Pendergast series. They've also written books individually. I don't think there is a really bad book in the bunch!

Oh dear! I have Storm Front in my audible library. I've wanted to start The Dresden files for some time now and picked the first book up in one of the sales. I shall see if I get pulled in. There are so many series that I've started and want to continue that it's mind boggling.
