Adding extra spaces to separate two authors

I was working on Alan E. Lewis (adding a period to the initial). When I went to combine, I found two other books listed for Alan E. Lewis that were not on the same topic. I suspect that these are two different writers.

The manual says to add an extra space between the first and last name. When there is a middle initial, is the space between the first name and initial or between the initial and the last name?
