The voting is near closing for the August group reads. So far it looks like the winning books will be Mountain Man and Jordan's Brains (pending any last minute votes).

We have a volunteer to moderate Mountain Man assuming it holds on. The question for those that will participate is, do you want a reading schedule that covers the entire month or will a schedule ending 14 Aug be okay?

Also, assuming Jordan's Brain holds on for second, is there anyone willing to moderate?

Next month's request for nominations will be up soon. Those books that didn't make the August list will be included. I'm going to cap the number of nominations at 10 to hopefully reduce the number of books with 1 or 0 votes. The deadline will also be sooner in the month so the poll will get posted sooner. The poll will also close earlier in the month so we have time to coordinate a moderator and give people time to get the book before the group read starts.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) I plan on participating in the group read with either title.
It does not matter to me if the book is read in a few weeks or over the coarse of the full month, I am flexible with that.
I think both your ideas are good about limiting the number of offered up titles by making the nomination period shorter (Capping it with the tenth nomination) and ending the voting sooner so there is time to purchase the title.
I would ask that you set up the poll in a manor so as NOT disclosure of who voted for which title, by not showing the results until the voting is over. But that is yours and Elisabeth call on that.

I'll have to check next time to see how to do that (non-disclosure of votes)

Carl (skeptic_rogue) | 19 comments Thanks for the work you are putting into this monthly book read Jim! I think your ideas make plenty of sense. I think we should keep the voting results public. Keeping the voter anonymous is a good idea. No matter what the group decides I am excited to participate!

April (asmohinani) | 79 comments I'm curious about the timeline of how we are going to do the group reads. I'm confused, if we read the book over the entire month when do we actually discuss the book? Is discussion opened up each week for certain sections?
On the other hand- If we set a time limit to complete the book, do we have pre discussion (no spoilers) for that time period and then open discussion for the book after the completion date?

I'm all for completing the book and then discussing. Anyone else have ideas? Preferences?

I realize this is Zombies! first group read and we have to shake the bugs out. (Or maybe I just have the bugs, YIKES!)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Some of the other groups would change the discussion to the first 25% of the book, then 50%, then 75%, then done, so that people could avoid spoilers.

I actually thought it would have worked better as separate topics.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) In group reads that I've done in the past, the books been divided up into three parts like Randy said above.
Group members may discuss only what has been already assigned by the discussion leader to avoid spoilers.
Only active participants of the book of the month are allowed to post comments in the first two reading assignments (provided that it's done in three parts) so that the discussion is kept between those who are "in the moment" of the read.
Reflections of previous readers are allowed in at the last section, again that's to keep the reading experience fresh for the new and current readers.
No off book topics are allowed so as to keep the threads untangled and readable.
(Speaking strictly about book of the month challenges here, nothing's worse than taking a book of the month seriously; reading and preparing for a good discussion than having to sort through dozens of comments which have little relevance to the intended topic just so you can post your thoughts on the reading assignment)
The discussion following the last reading assignment is usually open to any and all members who have read the book.
Now having said all that, I have no idea who will be leading this months discussions or what's their style/preferences.
