OK, a little later than planned, but I've started this.

I'm still debating, should I read the family details in the appendix first, or just go with the flow and see where that gets me.

I think you'll be fine to go with the flow - that's what I did but then I didn't realise there was an appendix until I got to it at the end. I think if you read it first it may not mean much to you as you haven't met the characters yet. I think Martin does a good job at explaining who's who during the story.

I am with Sarah and Shanna. I would not bother. Use it as reference.
