No argument that it is Robert Bloch quote. However, I would have thought that it would make some sort of sense to combine both versions that appear under the Bloch name BEFORE it becomes uneditable.

Er, it isn't in any edition of Catch-22 that I own and I don't remember reading it in ANY Heller book. In fact, "paranoid" is not in Catch-22.
According to this Wikipedia talk page, that line comes from the movie with Alan Arkin, and should be credited to the screenwriter Buck Henry. I have no idea, not having seen the movie, and the IMDB quotes page doesn't have it, so I can't verify that.
I've both read the book and seen the film, but I don't remember if it was in there. Over the years I've heard variations of it ('... they're not out to get you' is the one I'm most familiar with) and I used to assume it was just a saying.BTW, that same quote is also attributed to Kurt Cobain: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1805...
