I read this book and loved the complexity of it. I see that Sally has read it too, but no one else on this group has rated it yet. Perhaps when you do you'll come back to comment here.
My thoughts are all over the place. This is a rare book that I would be willing to read again to catch more subtle clues and understand the unique characterization even more than I already have.
I have plenty of comments saved to help me participate in a discussion later on the whodunit intricacy of the plot.
What I have said so far in my public review:
This is a stellar stand-alone novel; an intricate, psychological who-done-it set in a small town, with a much wider scope than the small town setting would imply.
I don't think a single character in the story was one dimensional, each has a secret, a past and issues to deal with and the intertwining and unraveling of the connections is fascinating. Few books make me want to read them again immediately, but this one does, to explore and reveal the tantalizing clues that had been there all along.
One of the strengths of a highly skilled author like Carol O'Connell is the ability to incorporate subtle references to events, actions and contemporary events and policies in ways to move the story along at breakneck pace and to allow the reader to connect with the characters and the story on a much deeper level. That this book connects on so many different levels isn't really a surprise to fans of O'Connell's Mallory series of books about a deeply complex character who at heart is a sociopath, and one we have come to admire
In Bone by Bone, the main family of characters even refer to this subtle communication style - only say what is necessary and let silence fill the conversation with what is unsaid. Much is said in this book. I highly recommend it.
