I'm on Page 286, and liking this book to an extent. The writer puts forth a captivating mix of literary brilliance and urban grit. But after taking three weeks to make it only halfway through (and the book due back at the library tomorrow), I'm vaguely disappointed with the pace of this story and not feeling a burning desire to hang in until the bitter end. Should I renew the book and invest three more weeks trying to finish? Or just quit now?

I loved this book. I say keep at it. I can't remember at what point it became one of my favorites, but it did take a while.
Guess I may be late, but I do prefer the book's second half.

I heartily recommend you return to it. The superhero thing is emphasized even less in the last half of the book, if that was a turn-off for you.
