I am the Messenger ending; can someone please explain what happened?

So i read I am the Messenger and I'm a little confused about the ending. I understand that the man at the end of the book is supposed to be the author, but above that, i feel like im not grasping what the author is trying to get across. is there a message im supposed to be getting?

It felt as though I read a cruel joke at first, but I now kind of enjoy the fact that the author chose to make a point that he/they have the power to create worlds in order to present a message they deem worthy enough to share with the world. That is if I interpreted it correctly!
