Owaiz Well, you're missing out on a lot. Pakistan has one of the best dramas in the world. or just probably the best. They might not have all that super-hero type technology but they all work on emotional level. I never liked comedy, desi or any other, but the serious dramas we have are awesome! except for the ones influenced by India.

I don't watch them anymore, but every time I'm home with family and they're watching I really want to watch the whole thing and all.

Sohaib | 6884 comments Hmm have u seen Korean dramas?? They are so extremely emotional... hit u where it feels... u know pyari pyari larkiyon ko rolatay hain.... uff I have watched just two seasons as of yet and they just aaho :-P:-(:-(:-(

Greatest thing is there is no season... just 20 episodes like Pakistani dramas :-)

I saw that drama almost three yrs. ago and i still remember that part!!!
And why would you kill your wife, won't she be a woman with a heart?

message 405: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz Nope, never seen Korean. But that wasn't my point. My point was, Pakistan has one of the best dramas. Our shitty movies overshadow them.

@Zenab: Because she loses all rights to being a human being and all that the moment she marries me. I want an educated doctor wife jo ghar ke saray kaam karay.

message 406: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
Sad part is .... In Pakistan you'll get away with that too!

message 407: by Sohaib (new)

Sohaib | 6884 comments Sad part is more than half of the pakistani boys dream about that :-(:-(

message 408: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz I blame the women for that. They don't stand up for themselves. They like taking shit and getting abused and when they become old they wouldn't support their own daughter if she goes through the same thing and instead of telling her to divorce they'd tell her bardasht karo woh theek ho jayega. Have another dozen kids phir dekhna.

message 409: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
The fact that their dreams come true and they get away with it, is even sadder!

message 410: by Sohaib (new)

Sohaib | 6884 comments @Zenab& @Owaiz very true.... Theek hai aurton ko Allah ne nazuk tabiyat bnaya hai... but this is just wrong :-(:-(:-(.... and this isnt just in middle class.... My aaya works in homes as cleaning lady managing four kids spontaneously while her husband sits in home and does nothing :-@:-(:-(

message 411: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
You can't blame the woman. In pakistan they've got no support from home... Like you said everyone tells her to bardasht... Toh phir woh kahan jaye... And sadly most women grow up thinking that kind of treatment is okay. They don't know their rights! They need to educated, empowered and also given other options.. as far as livelihood goes. And if they do stick it out on their own. There is hardly any security for women. Men look at a divorced women as vultures. And everyone tries to marry you off to a man your grandfather's age. Kion ke you're apparently damaged good now.
Everyone always says "ussey talaq ho gayi" "usey talaq de di" as if it's only a man's to give. A woman can't want or demand it.

message 412: by Sohaib (new)

Sohaib | 6884 comments I slightly disagree here... women abstain from taking action not because of lack of education or lack of empowerment... they choose not to do anything.... i have seen educated women taking the same shit as uneducated... the problem is exactly what u described... damaged goods syndrome :-(:-(:-(

message 413: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
It's also the stigma attached to the "divorced woman". They're lower than lowest in our society.

message 414: by Sohaib (new)

Sohaib | 6884 comments Yup... which is wrong... Agar bewah aurat akelay zindagi guzar sakti hai tau talaaq yafta kyon nhn?? why is there a need to marry at all??

A know of a girl who was married to a... manless man... and she was told to bear until one of her brother stepped in and said dimagh theek hai to the parents :-(:-(

message 415: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
Why can't she just re-marry to someone she likes... When she wants. If she wants. Beva or divorced!!!

message 416: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz I'd still blame women for that. They need to stand up for themselves instead of gossiping. My mum's maid divorced her husband because he beat her and now she's happily married to another guy. And well, she was just a maid. If she can do it, why can't others? I refuse to believe women are weak. Physically weak, yes, but why put up with emotional torture?

I know some women who put up with shit because they just don't want to do anything for themselves. If they go out and try to become independent, they can! In Pakistan, women do get jobs more easily than men. Why don't they go and become independent then? All they say is 'bachon ke liye'.

Khair, getting too deep for me.

Get a job and deal with harassment at work? You've gotta read working with sharks.
Damn why am I the only woman here trying to knock sense into you two.
Cannot blame a woman who has not other option in life. Have you even seen people rejecting some girl's rishta over amd over again kion le her mother is divorced and a single parent. "Beti bhi ma jesi ho gi"

I'm ending this by saying: "men are jerks. All of them" except my daddy ;$

message 421: by Sohaib (new)

Sohaib | 6884 comments @Zenab cool down behna!!!! I am not saying k larkiyon ko koi takleef ya pareshani nhn hai... I am just saying k u get what u strive for (AlQuran) and women are just too resigned in pakistan towards fate that those who can do sth dont do it at all :-(:-(

Am I a jerk too ??!! :'(:'(:'(:'(

message 422: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz There is not that much harassment. They are all nice women at work usually, well, because she's a girl. And its better than getting beaten at home, no? And if someone crosses a line the woman just needs to shout once. In Pakistan, men are like that. Larki ek cheekh maray nobody cares whether she's telling the truth or not. They'll beat the shit outta the guy.

So your husband is a jerk too? :P

I can really get into this and all but I just don't do deep.

Lara Zuberi (larazuberi) | 571 comments very interesting discussion..nice to see open-minded views/ women empowerment, etc.
i do have to say that umera's plays are excellent, humsafar was not umera's play and most of them do not have happy endings. qaid-e-tanhai is one of my favorites too, but i disagree that the ending was happy. their lives were already spent, and what was lost could never be recovered. Plus, the 'qaid-e-tanhai was a shift- initially the daughter-in-law was in qaid-e-tanhai, but eventually the mother-in-law found herself in that qaid-e-tanhai which she had built for herself.
Lahasil, Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishan, Durre Shehwar are all umeras plays, none of them had happy endings. Durre shehwar's ending was not understood by everyone, but it was beautiful.

message 430: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz @Lara: Well, the endings weren't exactly happy but there was forgiveness in all of them. How do you forgive people who ruin you? The wounds of time don't heal unless you go back in time which is impossible. The mother who forgives the daughter-in-law and stuff, the woman who forgives the husband, and all that. I've seen Lahaasil and heard of Meri Zaat and know the story. I don't get forgiveness.

message 431: by Lara (new)

Lara Zuberi (larazuberi) | 571 comments @owaiz, firstly, thank you for forgiving the forgiveness in the lost pearl.
Secondly, although stories don't need to have messages in them, I think Umera Ahmed has become such a household name, that the audience looks for something on that scale, and in that she has taken on her shoulders a responsibility that she probably wasn't prepared for. E.g., if she showed all marriages broken, people would have said she's justifying walking out rather than reaching a compromise.(And a lot of the young generation are influenced by her writing) In Sheh-re-zaat and Durreshehwar, the girl reconciles, but I don't think she clearly forgives, nor does the selfish husband transform into a great, giving person. In Qaide tanhai, they both carried some blame, and therefore guilt, and so forgiveness was reciprocal.

message 432: by Zenab (new)

Zenab Ch | 2099 comments Mod
Without forgiveness and giving second chances, life is bitter and lonely.

message 433: by Owaiz (new)

Owaiz The Lost Pearl was different. Her forgiveness did have a lot to do with the *pearl*, right?

In Qaid-e-Tanhai, I really did wish the girl walked out. Haven't seen other dramas. I'm not against compromises but I'm not against walking out either. Khair.

Haven't seen the other dramas.

i think Pakistani Dramas are way better... they have a good plot n different stories... All indian dramas usually show the same cunning mother in laws or Daughter in laws or jewelery or sarhis!! Dont mind, we all have different choices but you should give paki dramas a watch if you havent watched any!
our movie industry has also improved as new n talented faces has shown up i n past coupla years!! Seems like a Revolution to me! No hard feelings! coz i get fed up of their weird stories that go on like for a decade atleast! with their gods n goddesses! No offense... it just doesnt make any sense!!!! Not to me...

i think zindagi gulzar hey was an epic tale!! i dont watch alot of dramas!! just dont have enough time... i prefer reading novels.... n by that i also mean that i read urdu novels... you can suggest me more urdu novels.. i have read Imran Series by Mazhar kaleem M.A... n other novels like Abdullah by nadeem hashimi!! n some revealing the reality of muslim history... coz i think we need to know our history more n learn! nonetheless! we learn the hard way...

message 449: by Lara (new)

Lara Zuberi (larazuberi) | 571 comments There's no hum tv here so thank goodness for u tube and its high quality prints. Ok two more points on the forgiveness issue. @Aalia:In shehrezaat, my rake on it was that (SPOILER ALERT) it wasn't that she forgave him despite his infidelity. It was more about the fact that she accepted him because his actions were what led her to find God and her spiritual side.
@owais: in the lost pearl (SPOILER ALERT), the reason Sana forgave herself and Ahmer forgave her was related to the 'lost pearl' but the forgiveness she granted to the killer was just her Bara Dil. I questioned this while writing it, because if (God forbid) I was in her shoes, I wouldn't have been able to. But that's why stories are different from real life.
