honestly, it's one of the weirder customs in US, imo. Is December a no-electricity-bill month or what? O.o'

Nope and heating bills usually start running up even if you aren't running light more because it get's darker earlier. Some people just go nuts about the whole thing. These are usually the same people who don't maintain their xmas values throughout the year and only do the jolly & nice for the season (at least in my experience)
