They could be read as stand-alone stories, but they would make better sense read in order as they do follow on from one to the next - there may also be references to something which has happened before in a previous adventure. The whole series constitutes a quest from beginning to end, with the same characters featuring in each book. I hope that answers your question - thanks for your interest!
