Do you think these books would work as a tv-series?

Sofiab When reading this book and the second one I kept imagining them as a series. Maybe because I've watched to much Game of Thrones which is an adaption of long, detailed books with many point of view characters.
But another reason I think is that Follet has the main characters interacting with each other at different places of the world (some readers seemed to be annoyed by that but I liked it).

I guess the biggest obstacle for making a tv-series out of it is that the characters move around so much. But maybe the adaption could have them a little more stationary.
The first season could take place in the mining town (can't spell that one), London and St Petersburg.
And later seasons the locations could change.

melissa I would love to see Fall of Giants become a miniseries on tv! Going to buy book two!! We are also watching season 2 of Game of Thrones and love it!!

Why a miniseries?
I think there's enough material in there for at least two seasons.

melissa A two part movie. Very interesting books!!

John Lombardo Yes. Miniseries for both books would work.

Removed Removed It would definitely beat watching Survivor 2000 or whatever crazy number it is now on! I think there is definitely a TV series here. Or one incredible set of movies.

Jim Swike Yes, there are enough interesting characters and plot lines for a very good min-series, series or movie.

Jeff I found myself imagining a miniseries while reading this book, maybe because Pillars of the Earth was such a good adaptation.

Susan Ray Jeff wrote: "I found myself imagining a miniseries while reading this book, maybe because Pillars of the Earth was such a good adaptation."

Pillars of the Earth was a good mini series, but a terrible adaptation of a much better novel. (Notice nothing has been done with its sequel--World Without End.) If Fall of Giants (and Winter of the World) were to become a TV series, it would have to be like Downton Abbey and go on for multiple seasons. Anyone know when Book 3 of the trilogy is supposed to come out?

message 10: by Jeff (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeff Actually World Without End was made into a miniseries in 2012 although it was not as well received as Pillars of the Earth.

Mico Orda Absolutely, it would be a dream come true to have adapted into a TV Series. Every page was completely and captivating, that I couldn't stop reading. And character development is very intricate and well-crafted.

I think the books are more suited for an HBO production. 2 seasons per book in order to flesh out the intertwining storylines and timelines.

message 12: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Definitely...would be a fantastic mini-series. Anxiously awaiting the third book.

Cristiane G. Definitely !

message 14: by Tim (new) - rated it 2 stars

Tim Jin No, I really think that they should leave these books alone. I've read both books and also read Pillars and Worlds, AWESOME books, but I've tried watching Pillars, it doesn't compare to the print.

Mico Orda My picks for the starring cast:

- Grigoriy Dobrygin (Grigoriy Peshkov)

- Emilia Clarke(Maud Fitzherbert)

- Volker Bruch (Walter Von Ulrich)

- Perdita Weeks(Ethel Williams)

- Aaron Tveit(Gus Dewar)

- Danila Kozlovsky (Lev Peshkov)

- Lee Pace(Earl Fitzherbert)

- Richard Madden (Billy Williams)

- Harry Lloyd(Bernie Leckwith)

- Svetlana Khodchenkova (Princess Bea)

- Martin Wuttke (Otto Von Ulrich)

Kylie I believe these books would each work wonderfully as a TV mini-series or movie adaption (more so as a mini-series), as the "Kingsbridge" series did.

I drafted a cast for a TV mini-series/movie for Fall of Giants on IMDb.com. I chose actors with matching nationalities to the characters in the book, in an effort to avoid fake accents. I also matched all physical description provided in the book.

Gil Garcia Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth, was a great TV mini-series, and I would love to see World Without End and Fall of the Giants adapted into a mimi-series too.

Excellent cast pics. I never thought of Henry Cavill as Fitz, an interesting choice, I must say.

Jim Swike Yes, great characters, history, it would work as a TV series or mini series.

message 20: by Mico (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mico Orda Agreed. Maybe 2 seasons per book. And have Ken Follett write an episode like GRRM in GOT.

Leila After reading "Pillars of the Earth" I was very disappointed by the TV series - not a patch on "Game of Thrones" TV series. Not so sure therefore if it would be such a good idea.

message 22: by Faatz (last edited Jul 23, 2014 09:48AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Faatz I really enjoyed both "Fall of Giants" and "Winter of the World.". I don't think they would make very good miniseries if the job done on "World Without End" is any indication. It would take a lot more money than the producers are willing to spend to do them justice.

message 23: by Mico (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mico Orda True, the TV version of Pillars' narrative was disappointing(though MacFadyen's Philip was one of the best things in the show) butI think HBO will do justice if they'll produce it.

Mico Orda One of the moments in the book I love the most would be the Bolshevik uprising, because of its scale, people uniting and Grigori's showdown against the sniper and its great to see it done in an entire episode and Ken Follett writing it and Michelle MacLaren(Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead) as the director.

Patty Absolutely! An excellent series

Yes, at first I envisioned someone more like Jonathan Rhys Meyers for the role of Fitz, who has a reputation for playing complex yet somewhat villainous major characters (his character Henry VIII in The Tudors is very similar to Fitz's character).

However, after re-reading the physical description of Fitz, I realised Henry Cavil was a more appropriate match. He too has had experience with playing deceiving, philandering characters. In fact, his character Charles Brandon (also on The Tudors) seems to match Fitz with even more precision. Brandon, like Fitz, is filled with fiery ambition and fervent passion, and also experiences some level of guilt for his mistakes.

Haven't seen the Tudors yet(but I heard it was good). I find Cavill's Brandon interesting and I think he can bring some depth in that guilt aspect.

As for the scenes in the book, I would love to see an entire episode for Grigori with the Bolshevik uprising(similar to Blackwater and Watchers of the Wall).

My ideal title for the episode: "Ashes and Tears"
Written by Ken Follett
Directed by Michelle MacLaren

Patty I think this series would make an fantastic mini series

message 29: by Sophia (last edited Aug 08, 2014 01:24PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sophia James I think it would make a great tv series and I suspect it will happen.
I still think the best Ken Follet ever was Eye of the needle.
He is an author whose books work well on the screen.

message 30: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Myers Movie, mini-series, I'd love to see this trilogy taken to the screen. I love the writing and the stories of each character. They are strong and you can't wait to find out what will happen next.

message 31: by Mico (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mico Orda If Fitz, Ethel and the Peshkov brothers were well-written and portrayed by great actors onscreen, it'll attract a lot of acting awards and nominations.

Diana Elshoff I think it could really bring history about WW I to life through the use of characters from different walks of life. I certainly learned a lot that I didn't know. Some people would not read such a long book, but they might view a mini-series with the right actors.

Kathryn I think a mini series would be brilliant. We tend to study history from the side of not just the victors but also where we're actually from. Besides writing a really awesome book Follett gave us very likable characters from all sides of the conflict. I think that deepens gerneral understanding of the war.

Mico Orda Kathryn wrote: "I think a mini series would be brilliant. We tend to study history from the side of not just the victors but also where we're actually from. Besides writing a really awesome book Follett gave us ..."

Agree on the victors part, Follett does a great job on justifying their motivations and actions. I think the showrunners should focus on that part.

message 35: by Mico (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mico Orda For the TV version of 'Edge of Eternity', I think its second half needs an extended season(similar to Breaking Bad's season 5A and 5B).

message 36: by Mico (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mico Orda Reading 'Edge of Eternity' right now, there are great stuff, but underused POV's and a few dragging scenes. And for TV format, here's the changes I'd like to see:

1. Expand Rebecca's role, a new storyline, flesh out the Berlin Wall arc, which can make her a major player.

2. Cut Maria Summers(and the Kennedy affair), introduce Verena Marquand as a freedom rider, the ambush happens, which gives her motivation to join Martin Luther King.

3. Anna Murray can be also cut(it won't hurt the story), give her scenes to Jasper(especially scenes with Tania), that could allow him to have more screentime.

4. Hans Hoffman as the main antagonist in Lilli Franck's storyline, invented material, so we can see more of the Stasi.

5. Rewrite Cameron Dewar's age and replace George Jakes on the 'Operation Mongoose' storyline, its to expand his character.

6. For George Jakes, his storyline should be solely focused directly to Civil Rights/Martin Luther King, tone down his white house scenes/Bobby Kennedy and more interactions with Jacky and Greg, that could serve a context of his life struggle. Since Martin Luther King visited West Germany, which means they could have scenes with Rebecca, because she's the POV who's hardly interact with the other characters.

7. Rewrite Dimka and Tania as Volodya's children. As for Tania, she's a great character and other events like the First Space Mission could be introduced through her eyes.

8. Since Dave had scenes with Ethel, omit his fame and fortune scenes and replace them with scenes that focus on protests against the Vietnam War and Nixon, concerts that advocate Ethel's laws or something.

9. Follett has mentioned that the Welsh raised funds to replace the church glass in Alabama, this could be easily given to any British POV.

10. Remove the unecessary sex scenes and the love life. Make all the POV's as major players on the historical events.

Jim Swike Yes, I think this would work. His interesting characters would translate well to TV or film.
