Book: Dark Side of the Moon (Dark-Hunter, #10; Were-Hunter, #4) by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Dark Hunters, Book 10, Were Hunters, Book 4)
My Letter: "W"
Finished: 7/27/13
Rating & Review: ★★★, This one was okay. It wasn't bad but it was kind of long. It featured WereHunter Ravyn who was kidnapped in his Leopard form and rescued by Susan, who was allergic to cats. The irony!
Anyway, they were both lonely people who saw the hurt in the other. I felt awful for Ravyn for the way his family treated him so i was happy he found someone who understood and appreciated him. Plus she wasn't a damsel who needed rescuing.
Anyway, out of everything in this book, I wanted to slap Nick. He is working my last nerve with his pity party. Next, I want to drop kick Bitch Queen Artemis, who is so pathetic she always has to resort to blackmail to get laid. LOSER!
I am trying to read my way to Acheron's book because he needs a hug from me!

View: "The sheet slipped to give her a nice view of one bare hip" (Pg. 80 in Dark Side of the Moon)

Football: "there would never be another call from Angie complaining about Jimmy watching football games on TV" (Pg. 143 in Dark Side of the Moon)

Mandy Sickle (thereadingdiaries) | 1343 comments I don't get books from the library. I buy them all. I have kids, a giant puppy and a very jealous cat. I decided to try the base library last week. I let the kids pick out a bunch and we hadn't been home twenty minutes before the dog had destroyed one and the three year old decided to draw in another. It makes me pull my hair out when books get destroyed but I take it better if I don't have to show up at the library and beg for forgiveness. So embarrassing. Plus its on base so I've run into spouses I know. I'll just order it on amazon. Plus I'm a book hoarder.

Book: Almost to Die For Almost to Die For (Vampire Princess of St. Paul, #1) by Tate Hallaway By Tate Hallaway (Vampire Princess of St. Paul)
My Letter: "V"
Finished: 7/28/13
Rating ★★★★★
Review:

I decided to read Almost to Die For as this week’s challenge book. Ana short for Anastasija has been raised by only her mother trained to be a witch. However unlike her friends and fellow witches she exhibits very limited powers. She fears that at her Wiccaning she won’t have the power to join the true witches letting her mother down. It’s on her sixteenth birthday she learns that her father is the king of the vampires making her a princess. Suddenly Ana is in the middle of a powerful power struggle between her parents who are mortal enemies.

It’s while trying to call the East at her Wiccaning that everything turns upside down, the group is attacked by vampires revealing that Ana doesn't know everything and her mother has been keeping secrets. After running into the woods she meets her father’s royal guard Elias who starts to explain it’s not all black and white. That maybe the vampires aren't the bad guys her mother and fellow witches have made them out to be. As Ana is drawn into a new world that she knows little about she starts to learn that there are two sides to every story and maybe the vampires aren't the bad guys after all.

Ana is a great character she’s half witch and half vampire giving her abilities from both sides. She’s stubborn, independent, and fun to read about. She’s torn between to guy who happen to be on either side of the line. She has Nik who’s a vampire slayer also a true witch who would make her mother proud. Then there is Elias who is a super old vampire and her father’s royal guard. I tend to avoid love triangles but I have to admit this one has me intrigued.

Almost to Die For is a unique concept for me I like the idea that Ana is half witch and half vampire. By being from both worlds she’s tied to both but not inhibited by just one. She was created to bring peace between the witches and vampires who have been at war forever. Ana has some big shoes to fill but she deals with the truth better than I expected. Though she did lick the guy she doesn’t like in schools bloody nose. The book is action packed right from the start it was easy to lose all track of time till the end. The book is well written it flows along smoothly creating an exciting story, capturing the imagination I felt like I was there with Ana. I also like as the book progresses Ana grows as a character making it easy to connect with her, even if she is torn between two guys. At the moment I can’t say if I’m team vampire or witch so we will have to wait till I start the second one. So far love the story can’t wait to see what happens next.

View: He lifted an arm to ward it off, but stumbled into the shadows of the trees and disappeared completely from view. (Page 71)

Football: Our gym teacher was Mr. Johnson. He was a thousand years old, perpetually grumpy, and the coach for football, naturally. (Page 116)

Book: Obsidian Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My Letter: "L"
Finished: 8/3/13
Rating ★★★★★
Review:

I decided it was time to join the rest of the world and start the Lux Series. It was a perfect fit for my words with friends challenge also bonus points. Katy is a book reviewing blogger who has moved to West Virginia three years after her father passed away. Her mother decided it was time to move on even if it is right before the start of her senior year. At least she has her books and blog to keep her busy. Her mother is dead set that she gets away from her blog and starts living her life, pushing her to meet their neighbors who happen to be a boy and girl her age.

To get her mom off her back she heads over but is confronted by the most gorgeous guy she’s ever seen, who is your typical jerk. After her confirmation with her neighbor she heads to the only grocery store in town to do some shopping but his sister finders her. Yet Dee is nothing like her brother instead she’s intent on becoming Katy’s new best friend. The duo becomes fast friends but when Dee heads out of town all the sudden she pushes her brother Daemon into being nice to Katy. Dee is determine for Daemon to also place nice with Katy and forces the two together.

Katy is conflicted over her hot neighbor because she can’t help hating him even if she does find him attractive. When Katy is attacked outside the library it’s Daemon who comes to her rescue and secrets that have long been kept a secret start to come out. Now Katy knows she’s living next door to aliens but it doesn't change her feelings about Dee and Daemon. As if almost dying once wasn't enough the they learn that three more Arum are closing in. All will be tested as they try to keep Katy alive as well as themselves without killing each other.

I love Katy she’s so easy to connect with plus all her little blogging references make me giggle. She’s a strong independent, smart character with a wit to battle Daemon. I love the she’s not swooning over, Daemon it’s a true love hate relationship. The other characters in the book enhance the story my two favorite Dee is the best friend everyone wants, Ash the girl you can’t help disliking right from the start. I have high hopes for the future of Katy and Daemon, can’t wait to see their relationship progress.

Obsidian is a captivating story that had me right from the start refusing to let go till the last page and leaving me wanting more. An intricate story mixing action, suspense, aliens, romance, bad guys, a book reviewer and one sexy guy to create an amazing series. I love the unique alien concept I've only read a few but alien books but this one by far is by far superior to the rest. The characters are loveable, easy to connect with and one is even swoon worthy but don’t tell him that he’s arrogant enough. I think the way the author created a character that we can relate to on a new level as a blogger is a brilliant idea. The book is a beautiful well written story that flow from start to finish. An entertaining story that teens as well as adults will fall in love with. I had a hard time putting Obsidian down; I ended up staying up late reading till I fell asleep only to finish in the morning. I just really loved Obsidian and I’m tickled that I have the next two on the shelf I need to read them before the fourth comes out. I can’t wait to read more about Katy and Daemon. A must read if you like a paranormal romance. I had to be careful while writing this review I felt like I could babble on about the book for pages, and didn't want to give too much away.

Jail - Daemon had acted like he'd been released from a twenty-year jail sentence, and he was never around when I was with Dee anymore. (Page 219)

Chicken - “Honey, are you sure you’re feeling okay?” Mom hovered over the couch, frowning. She’d been at it all day since I’d woken up. “Do you need anything? Some chicken soup. Hugs? Kisses?” (Page 283)

Book: Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound, #1) by Jennifer Ashley by Jennifer Ashley
My Letter: "A"
Finished: 8/6/13
Rating & Review: ★★★
Attorney Kim Fraser was retained to represent a shifter accused of murdering his human girlfriend. In order to prepare her defense, Kim came to shifter town to interview those who knew the accused, and see if she could gather some character witnesses. Her investigation brought her home to the leader of the South Texas shifter pack and his family, specifically his son Liam Morrissey. From the moment they met, Liam was attracted to Kim, so he scent marked her. Now begins the task to get Kim to be his mate and protect her from those who wished to keep shifters and humans apart, while Kim worked hard to gather enough evidence to prove her clients innocence.

The story and the writing was okay. I guess I was used to her HR's (The Mackenzie/Highland series) so I was expecting the same well laid story. It wasn't as smooth or believable. But it is a book 1. I will continue with the series and see what happens.

Jail: "Talking to Brian at the jail." (Pg. 37 in Pride Mates)

Chicken: "They do a mean chicken fried steak." (Pg. 55 in Pride Mates)

Word of the week: Jail

Book choice: Intensity by Dean Koontz Intensity by Dean Koontz
My Letter: I
Date Finished: 8/8/13
Rating ★

Review: This is my third attempt to read and enjoy Koontz. The third time is not a charm. While the premise was interesting, it was drawn out way, way too long. About 1/4 of into it and it was work to continue. No fun at all.

Koontz is wordy, too wordy. His heroine's actions were out there, way out there and simply unbelievable. Another example of a "smart" woman who is, in actuality, an idiot. The bad guy is comparably unbelievable. The paranormal aspect is also, well, unbelievable and overdone. Yea, I know, it's fiction, but I need to be able to hang onto something and there was nothing.

At this point, I think Koontz has a habit of forcing things along, exaggerating everything, and enjoying too much the sound of his own voice.

To sum up. I continue to wonder what all the fuss is about with Koontz. I doubt I'll try him again anytime soon. Needless to say, I won't read this again. I can't and won't recommend this title, and at this point, will steer clear of Koontz - too many books, too little time - wasted enough with this author.
