Jeremiah Mccoy (jeremiahtechnoirmccoy) | 80 comments If you like some of the old school games liek Baldur's Gate, you might also check out Shadowrun Returns which just came out. It is only 20 bucks and it is a lot of fun. They released a campaign editor for it so people are also making new content for it, as well.

Evan (sampsom) | 7 comments I would recommend the fallout series, it was taken over by Bethesda for the third game, it is similar to Skyrim in the cycle between first and third person. I know Portal is first person but still play it its a very good series.

Any 'romance' that occurs in those games stems from the story you tell yourself as you play, I.E., you get attacked by Orcs and Lydia saves your sorry hide."

There are some mods for those games which give romance some more depth, though. On my last play-through of Fallout New Vegas, I added an NPC mod called Willow which included side missions and a variety of everyday interactions that would affect your level of friendship. The voice acting was pretty decent, too.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments Interesting! Right now I'm starting with Baldur's Gate :)

I loved Baldur's Gate, also the Neverwinter Nights games, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (though I didn't like 2 as much). The older Elder Scrolls games are good too but more open world than straight storyline like you have it in the Mass Effect and the Dragon Age series.

The Walking Dead was mentioned already. absolutely great game.

I do play SWTOR as well, which kinda falls in the ME/DA category but it's an mmo. Still, I enjoy all the classes there and you can solo a character and aren't necessarily required to play in groups though it's a lot more fun if you play with other people.

Arcanum is good too.

You can get a lot of the older games at gog.com for very reasonable prices.

I don't get what you mean by ME/DA category or mmo... Please explain :)

And thanks again :D

Gordon McLeod (mcleodg) | 348 comments Dishonored is first person, but man is the story strong in it. I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I thought I'd throw it into the ring here.

Thanks! I have picked a game for now, but not ended my search for good games - I'm going to play games forever ;) so I do need to know more names!

Chris (cpostings) | 3 comments I just treated myself to Shadowrun Returns, looking forward to getting stuck into it. Massive fan of the older Baldurs Gate games too, plus their respective original table-top roleplaying games. Saw Dishonored mentioned there and I second that, very good game, plus some good expansions/DLC.

I'm guessing ME and DA stand for Mass Effect and Dragon Age in this context.

mmo is an acronym for "Massively Multiplayer Online", usually followed by letters deisgnating the type of game, i.e. mmorpg for "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game". World of Warcraft would be the archetypical example of the genre.

If you do not mind somewhat dated graphics, Planescape: Torment is the closest game to resemble reading a book, and I mean it in good sense. Two other games that come close to it in terms of story are Witcher games. All of these are available from gog.com

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments Ummm... never knew of these acronyms before... thanks for the info :)

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments The Planescape:Torment is quite close to my requirements.

I guess graphics like Dink Smallwood are too dated to be available now... :)

Thank you!

yes, ME for Mass Effect, DA for Dragon Age. The reason I somewhat categorized them is because that if you like the fancy character creator, the romances, and the good graphics then SWTOR might be a good pick for you because Bioware is sticking pretty close to what has worked for them so far. If you choose one of the older games, they don't have the same quality when it comes to graphics, the main protagonist often doesn't have a voice over, and the gameplay can be a bit chunky compared to those new titles from which I might wanna exclude DA:Origins because while the graphics were "okay" the Warden still has no voice. The character creator is pretty awesome though.

If you are really interested in story then I can agree with the games that have been mentioned here already.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments Honestly, I've only played a few games till now - the closest I got to these games is Dink Smallwood, and I usually only got games that were free for download on safe sites.

Prince of Persia, Doom and Dink - I doubt if I've ever played other games.

So basically, I don't know which to pick, since you folks have pretty amazing recos for me. I am blindly picking up one for the time being, and will slowly pick up other games too.

I'm just a newbie to these games, I should say. But I'm mighty glad you folks chimed in with your recos. I've never heard of these games before.

It's always great to discover new games. And I really hope you enjoy Baldur's Gate as much as I did. I know the gameplay can be a bit frustrating when you start it for the first time but it won't take long until you get the hang of it. For such games, I recommend GameBanshee and their walkthroughs in case you ever get stuck or want to get an idea what to do :) Have fun.
