Chandra I am completely confused with the ending. Did Alex die? Explain the last letter Rebecca wrote to Alex about the daughter? What exactly was the "shocker" about Rebecca's mother that her father told her? Was it just the story of how her parents met? Were Alex and Rebecca in love with each other?

I enjoyed the book but the ending just lost me...I must have missed some clues along the way.

Melissa I was also confused. She said that this was the love of her life...as friends or something else??

Dena Huff I read the book some time ago, but if memory serves, yes Alex did die. And I thought by "love of my life" she meant friendship. The shocker was that the mother's stories hadn't been true. She was not the assistant to the great musician and did not give it up for Rebecca. She was a waitress who met the father and got pregnant and had to marry him.

I liked the book until about three fourths through when I realized she wasn't going anywhere with all of the information. It was disjointed and it was like she was trying to tell too many stories. She should have just focused on one or two. I did like the setting and time period and found some of that interesting.

That's why I think the ending was bad - she tried to tie up too many loose ends. She had wandered all over the place and couldn't get back to the point. (Kind of like I am doing now!)

Overall, I didn't really like it by the end.

Brenna I wasn't so confused over Alex choosing to die the way she did, but I thought that Alex was planning on doing something a lot sooner (ie. at the restaurant where the husbands meet and Alex gives the baby to Rebecca. I believe Rebecca to not be a strong advocate for herself. The only time she seemed to is when she decided on the abortion rather than go to the convent to wait through the pregnancy. She seemed strong enough to deal with her parents and the fall out of pregnancy of an unmarried woman in the 1960s, but once she was put down by the professors and started to lose the connection with Alex , it's as if she just stopped.

message 5: by Jen (new) - added it

Jen I just finished the book and Alex committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, she ran her car in a closed garage.

The shocker I think was the fact that her mother was pregnant with her before her parents were married. Rebecca's mom acted as if her life was a perfect love story, when in actuality it wasn't.

I found that this book took to long to get going. I was bored through the first half of it.
