Why Is Literature so Pessimistic About The Future?

Well, I say that the only technology we need to fear is the appliance that is built without an off switch.

It is ourselves, not technology, that cause issues. Because we are afraid to turn shit off.

In a short answer, I would say because society is generally pessimistic about the future, unfortunately. I would honestly like to see a dystopia where not everything was doom and gloom, merely trying to improve upon society (a sort of hash between utopia and dystopia, I suppose; I'm sure those exist somewhere).
