possibly, but if you've been declined 400 times and approved 50 times, that wouldn't look good.

message 1902: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments But how do you control that? :)

message 1903: by Dana (new)

Dana | 887 comments How do you tell how often you have been declined

If you go to 'activity' and then on that page use the drop down menu to select 'declined requests' you should be able to get the number that way.

Irene wrote: "But how do you control that? :)"

You can't control it, other than not requesting books that you know you won't get, or reading loads of 'read now' titles. I think that's the point, because you can't control it, it gives the publisher an idea as to how popular you are with other publishers?

message 1906: by rachel, x (new)

rachel, x (typedtruths) | 8401 comments I have been approved 11 times and declined 14. That's why I started using Edelweiss instead - I get approved 100% more. I am trying to use Netgalley more now but I need to read all my old Netgalley books to get my ratio back up. Its only on 62%. Oops!

message 1907: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Honestly, I don't see how that'll help :) But okay

Do you mean to publishers? Well, if you are the sort of reader that doesn't have a blog so only reviews on here or on Amazon but constantly request the popular books, then its probably only because you want free access to that book. You probably aren't a great reviewer and if you have been declined numerous time it warns the other publishers off so it is helpful to them but certainly not to us! :)

That's a good way to put it. I couldn't explain it.

message 1910: by elle (new)

elle (ellealf) I think what should be more important is how many feedback you give, not how many times you get declined :/

Thanks! It was a little blunt but hopefully helpful. I'm not saying all only Goodreads reviewers are like that though. A lot are though.

Same.

That's obviously looked at as well, we were just discussing the decline rate because we didn't realise there was such a thing until Siobhan told us ☺

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Oh. I suppose that makes sense. :)) Thanks

message 1916: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 47 comments Each publisher has different requirements. To me I think it is more important to see if the person is actually reading and reviewing the books vs seeing how many times they've been declined.

I know what you mean XD

message 1919: by Dana (new)

Dana | 887 comments weird it says I have been approved 50 times but on my profile page it says 164 approvals

message 1920: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Yeah mine says 24, but my profile says 80.. Which is more accurate!

message 1921: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod
If you're looking at approvals under activity, that's only approvals which haven't been archived yet. the number on your profile will be total approvals ☺

message 1922: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod
If you go to activity, and then archived, that tells you how many books you were approved for that have now been archived, so in theory if you add 'approvals' plus 'archived' you should get the same number as is on your profile.

message 1923: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod
Yeah, I just checked and mine adds up to the right number ☺

message 1924: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan Davis | 14 comments Interesting discussion! I wouldn't get too hung up on the approvals vs declines stats. Per my earlier post I look at a number of different boxes and each separate request is viewed on its own merits. If someone has a high decline rate I would just investigate their profile more thoroughly, I certainly wouldn't immediately decline the request. If someone reads a lot of YA sci-fi/dystopian and gives most of these books decent ratings then I really wouldn't care about the amount or % of declines. I know a lot of bigger publishers decline those with low blog following or no blog, and this can adversely impact the rating. That doesn't faze me at all. My advise is:

*Always read and review the books you receive (even if it's months down the line, that's ok).
*Provide a well-written review with constructive criticism
*Always post your feedback to Netgalley/Edelweiss
*Where possible post to Amazon, GR, B & N etc and mention this in your NG feedback. Some reviewers add links to their review too which is really helpful and easy for the author to share online.
*Ensure your profile contains enough information about you and contains valid links. Update it periodically.

I think if you were doing the above it would increase your approval rating, certainly within the indie community.

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I just updated my profile because you mentioned this :) So that's a big help!

Can you see the rating for each book that I reviewed? :)

You're very helpful!

Glad to be of some assistance Irene :) I can't see the individual ratings you have assigned to other books on Netgalley.

Dory (fishthatreads) 11 books? When will it stop?
It must be so bland.

rachel, x (typedtruths) | 8401 comments Dory wrote: "11 books? When will it stop?

The series is finished (there were 10 books) but Cabot has just written this one to summarise what happened to Mia after the end of the series. Or something like that. Its set five years after book ten, I think. I don't know exactly.

I agree. I am only up to book five and its bland already.

message 1933: by Katie (new)

Katie How do you guys submit your reviews to Edelweiss? I just reviewed my first book there and realized the format is much different from Netgalley.

Do you just post your review, or do you also add blog links, dates the review will be up, etc? I wasn't sure so I just added it to the bottom, under the review. I'm surprised there isn't a place for it.

message 1934: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

I add it at the bottom the same as you.

Alright, thanks! I wasn't sure about adding it, but it seems like important information for the publisher to have, so I just found someplace for it LOL

I loved throne of glass, but then every book after that one was terrible.

I didn't really like the second or the third one. question is will this new one be like throne of glass, or the other two?

message 1943: by Abi (new)

It says 'Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin' which makes me think it will be high fantasy, and I don't do well with high fantasy.

message 1945: by Tati (new)

Tati I love A Song of Ice and Fire, but I couldn't finish Graceling... I requested it, let's see if I get it or not

message 1946: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Yeah, I liked Graceling, but then I hated fire and bitterblue. Maybe I should do the same, leave it up to the publishers to decide if I'll read it...

The George R.R. Martin bit is the thing that's putting me off. Not a big fan of high fantasy either.

message 1948: by Irene (new)

have you read the graceling books? they are worse than poison study for being high fantasy.

message 1950: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Me? I haven't, no. I haven't really read a lot from that genre. I just dislike them because it takes me an hour to get through 20 pages :|
