Oh gosh. I feel quite faint. I actually got approved by Simon Pulse on Edelweiss. That hardly ever happens!
They usually just decline me, I got like 3 rejections from them the other day. they must have pressed the wrong button this time!
I don't even bother requesting books from some publishers on edelweiss any more. I don't bother with penguin, or sourcebooks, or hatchet, or simon and shulster. I can't take the rejection ha ha.

I think some publishers are just always hard. But hatchette approve me on netgalley, but not on edelweiss, and sourcebooks are the same.

Also, can other publishers see your reviews or just your ratio?
I usually just try to write 3 paragraphs
- what i thought about the characters
- what i thought about the storyline
- what i thought to the ending.
my reviews are long or short depending on the book, as long as you explain what you did and didn't like, it shouldn't matter how long the review is.

I never, ever get approved on Netgalley. Not sure why. I normally have a good ratio. I only keep an account on it for "read now" at the moment because I cannot be bothered requesting and getting denied!

I'd read it with you but I have to read undertow and stromfront first and I don't think I'll get to them that soon. :)
It's not released til march, and I'm pretty swamped at the moment, so if you let me know when you decide to read it, I might be able to join you ☺

Are your reviews the same as the ones you post here? Can I maybe see one of a book you loved and one that you hated? :)

I'm a self-published author who uses Netgalley. Given the above thread, I thought it might be useful to point out some of the things I look for when deciding which review request to approve:
*A decent feedback rating - if the reviewer doesn't tend to provide feedback or post a review I'm less likely to approve.
*Type of Book Interest - my book is YA sci-fi romance, so I look for reviewers who like this genre, and have read, reviewed and liked other similar books.
*Type of reviewer - I don't mind if the reviewer doesn't have a blog, or if the blog has a small following. However, having a Goodreads account is the minimum I expect. A twitter account is also beneficial, especially if you post your reviews there too.
*Reviewer Bio - Some of the bios are way too short and tell me nothing about the reviewer. I'm not likely to give my book away for free unless I feel I'm going to receive an honest review in return. It's helpful for authors if reviewers post reviews in a variety of places e.g. Amazon, GR, B&N, iBooks. If a reviewer comments that they will post on several sites I'm more inclined to approve them.
*Links - a lot of reviewers don't list any links, or list them incorrectly, or forget to add their Goodreads profile. Include all relevant profiles where you publish reviews!
*Quality of Reviews - I'm looking for well written high quality reviews. Even if you don't like my book I'd hope that your review will be professionally written, and provide constructive criticism. A lot of reviewers I research are great at providing well written balanced feedback - commenting on plot, characters and pacing, and what they liked and didn't like. Some write awful reviews that slate the author, the writing, and have nothing nice to say. If I see a lot of these types of reviews I won't approve that reviewer.
I think some of the larger publishers have written policies on Netgalley, that you could check out. I remember looking at a few before, and the size of the blog following is one of their key criteria.
Anyway, I hope I haven't offended anyway by my honesty. I hope my feedback helps!

Yep, they're exactly the same. All the books which I have read on a read-to-review basis are on this shelf - https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... and this shelf - https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I've seen some authors state publically on netgalley 'if your average review rating on goodread is less than 3 stars, then I will not approve you'

Do you look at a person's average review rating Siobhan?

I can see the full profile including links, and all the stats for previous feedback, though not the actual feedback itself. It also shows % of approval rate for that reviewer, and the number of times that reviewer has been approved and declined.

I do consider the average rating. If someone has a high percentage of 1 and 2 stars (above 15% of overall ratings) I'm reluctant to approve.

Thank goodness for that! I've replied to Tati's thread, but if there is anything else you would like to know feel free to ask. Can I also just add how important reviews are to authors, particularly newbies like me. So what you guys do is really awesome, thanks so much!

No problem Dana, anytime. :)

Does it mean they will likely approve me in the future?

Oh dear ☹ denials are not nice.

I think cooperative is just the name of the group/publisher on netgalley ☺

Really? huh, I had my hope high for a while, lol
I think it's because patchwork press is like run by a group of indie authors or something, so maybe that's where the cooperative comes from?
I think they did it so that they could get listed on netgalley. it costs a lot so the authors could't afford it individually. It costs like $400 for each book for 6 months, or something like that!
I'm sure I read it somewhere on the patchwork press website. it's not cheap to list your book on netgalley!

Its because i request alot too.
But I get accepted often enough to keep my tbr pile high.
If they pick according to approval/decline rating. It doesn't go well for me x)
Thanks @Siobhan you are helpful :)

I have 87 declined, 421 approvals, and 13 invitations. So would that work out to 1:4, or 1:5? Would that be a good ratio?

I know your feedback to approval ratio is supposed to be important (mine is usually at around 88-91%).
But I don't have a blog (just goodreads) and I get declined a lot. I think I have been approved for around 75 and declined for 116.
I suppose it tells them at a quick glance if you're a good choice. If you're usually approved more than declined I suppose it looks like other publishers have already tried you out and like you?

Following that logic, it'd mostly be the numbers of approval, rather that it'd be approval vs. declines, right? :)
