Hi, everyone! So, the other mods and I decided we'd try something new this coming month.

In addition to our regular Books of the Month (one Amish read and one Christian fiction), we're going to try to have a series to read over the next few months.

For Example:

August - The Secret by Beverly Lewis (Seasons of Grace #1).
Then for September, we'd pick up with the next.
September - The Missing by Beverly Lewis (Seasons of Grace #2).
October - The Telling by Beverly Lewis (Seasons of Grace #3)

Then, in November, we'd have a new series to read!

By doing this, we can read a whole series within a few months rather than reading one book, then waiting another six months for the sequel to be eligible!

Rules for Nominations
1.) Any Amish series is eligible.
2.) One nomination per person.
3.) If two people nominate the same series, each person's vote counts. So the series will feature twice in the list to give each series an equal chance.
4.) For this month, nominations will be open from the 11th to the 18th. This gives you one week, including today.
5.) Please don't nominate a series we've already started. Check out our previously read books here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
6.) Only nominate the first book in a series.
7.) Please only nominate a series that has been completed.
8.) Lastly, since this is a new feature for our group, feel free to post your feelings and future suggestions for how the thread or read should run!

Note:We're trying to decide whether or not we should put up the series everyone nominates in a poll and have everyone vote, or if we should stick to our usual routine and use Random.org. Please let me know what you guys would prefer!

Nominations so far:
1.) Fields of Corn by Sarah Price (Natalie)
2.) The Amish Midwife by Mindy Starns Clark (Brittany)
3.) A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman (Lorie)
4.) The Secret by Beverly Lewis (Diane)
5.) The Secret by Beverly Lewis (Rachel)
6.) When the Heart Cries by Cindy Woodsmall (Kate)
7.) Fields of Corn by Sarah Price (Shaz)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments Wow! This is a good idea Brittany. I wonder why no one has thought of it before today.

message 3: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments I will start by nominating Leaving Lancaster by Kate Lloyd. This is the first in the Legacy of Lancaster trilogy.

Thanks, Natalie! I've been pondering the idea for a while, but just today ran it by the other mods. I hope it turns out to be a great feature for the group.

Maybe if the other mods - and everyone else agree - we could even do this for Christian Fiction series? I guess it all depends on how many BotMs everyone would like to see on here...

And great choice, Natalie. I've been wanting to read that series for a while!

I think I'll nominate The Amish Midwife, book one in the Women of Lancaster County.

message 5: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments @Brittany: You're welcome. As for nominating The Amish Midwife, I'm not sure that would work since we just did a group read of Courting Cate last month and Leslie Gould co-wrote the series.

@Natalie: I think we're gonna suspend the author rule, at least for the first month. That way, it would be easier to get the Group Read set up... I guess I can always nominate another if the other mods want to do it differently.

That's the fun of starting my own suggestion - I can bend the rules from time to time. =P

If we do the author thing I think it should only apply to the series read and not have anything to do with the Amish read . So since we have not had any author in this group then we could nominate any.

I like this and will think about a series. Personally I like the random drawing. It gives everyone a chance.

message 9: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 340 comments Mod
@Lorie - I think that's fair.

If everyone likes using Random.org, we can certainly use that. I just know that a lot of other groups use the poll to choose group reads and I figured I'd just throw it out there as an option. =)

A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman, The Pebble Creek series. I think the third one in that series just came out last week or so.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) This sounds like a great idea! Thanks for starting this, Brittany. Since the group had grown so much since we started it (and the genre!) it makes sense to change our group reads to suit our members' needs. I'll have a think before nominating something :)

message 12: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Thanks Brittany for starting this! I agree with Rachel and I think this is another option for our ever growing group.

I would like to nominate:

The Secret by Beverly Lewis

I've been wanting to read this series since I bought it 2 years ago and I never got around to it!

message 13: by Rachel (last edited Jul 12, 2013 06:21AM) (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I think I'm going to nominate The Secret as well, as I have all three books sitting on my shelf! Two of them belong to a friend, so I've been planning on reading them this year anyway.

message 14: by Kate (new)

Kate (liahonagirl) What an awesome idea! We should also probably make it a rule that the entire series needs to be finished in order for it to be nominated (though, that should go without saying!) :)
I think I'm going to nominate the 'Sisters of the Quilt' series by Cindy Woodsmall which starts out with When the Heart Cries

Yay! I'm so glad that everyone likes the idea. I didn't want to step on any toes when I suggested it. Lol. ^-^;

Good point, Kate! Does anyone know if Kate Lloyd's series is finished yet? I'm also not sure about Mindy Starns Clark's. I know there's a new book coming out in August, but I'm not sure if it's the last one. Someone might need to do some investigating...

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 340 comments Mod
I did a little bit of research and it doesn't look like Kate Lloyd's series is finished yet. She has another one coming out in 2014. Mindy Starns Clarks has another one coming out in August like you said Rachel, but I didn't find any more after the fourth one. It looks as if she'll be starting another series after that fourth book, so maybe that's evidence that she'd finished with it? I'm not sure...

Natalie, it looks like you'll probably have to nominate another book. =/

Also, if needed I can also nominate another book...

message 18: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments @Brittany: Oops. You are right. She gave me the working title yesterday so the third is in the database now.

message 19: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments I will try again with Fields of Corn by Sarah Price. Will you just void our nominations?

message 20: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 340 comments Mod
I'll just change it. No biggie.

message 21: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments @Brittany: Thanks.

message 22: by Shaz (new)

Shaz (zabooksihaveread) | 74 comments Love the idea of a series to read.

I would also like to nominate Fields Of Corn by Sarah Price as I currently have the series waiting to be read.

message 23: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments @Brittany: Just to be clear, would we be discussing each book in the series while we're reading it in addition to the other group read that month?

Natalie wrote: "@Brittany: Just to be clear, would we be discussing each book in the series while we're reading it in addition to the other group read that month?"

I would think so. We'll probably have our own little discussion thread while the other Amish read has its own thread.

Thanks to all of you guys who participated in nominating books. I truly hope this new idea for the group turns out to be beneficial!

According to Random.org, our series read for the next three months will be...

5.) The Secret by Beverly Lewis

Thanks for nominating it, Rachel! I read this series a couple years ago and it was great. I'm looking forward to a great discussion. :)

message 27: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Yay! It sounded like a few of this had this series waiting to be read, so hopefully it'll make for some good discussions. Will we start with the first book in August, then move on to the 2nd in September and the final book in October?

message 28: by Lorie (new)

Lorie | 1324 comments Mod
I've read all in that series but the last book so it will be good for me to get to finish a series.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

My library has all 3 books in this series so I will be reading this one. My library doesn't have the other books so I am going to have to pass on reading those. I am over my book buying limit.

message 30: by Rachel (last edited Jul 18, 2013 07:03AM) (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Glad you can join us, Vicky! As much as I like joining in with the group reads, sometimes I have to skip a month or two if the book is quite expensive and I don't have access to it--although I have found some really good bargains on older books on Amazon Marketplace.

message 31: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 127 comments Oh good, I have this in my tbr pile. I like to join in but don't want to buy a bunch of extra books when I already have so many waiting tbr.

I have a Nook I bought it before the Kindle allowed downloading of library books. I was going to wait until my e-reader no longer works to replace it. I have noticed that Amazon does seem to have better pricing and more variety of free books than Nook. I have been debating whether to go ahead and get a Kindle.

That's the plan! If you can think if a better way to do it, feel free to suggest! I just figured a month would give everyone time to read through it...

message 34: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1130 comments @Brittany: What day do we start nominating for the next book or series? I'm going to away until the the 16th of next month. I really don;'t want to miss out on the second in the new process.

message 35: by Kate (new)

Kate (liahonagirl) I'm guessing since the series is 3 books long, we won't be needing to have nominations until October, so we can start another series in November. Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! :)

message 36: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 340 comments Mod
Correct, it won't be until October. So don't worry, Natalie, you won't be missing out on anything. :)

Hello all. As you can see by the last entry it's been a while since this topic was visited.

What do you think? Should we revisit a series read (over a couple months) in addition to our regular monthly read?

message 38: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 0 comments my feeling; if we make a notation in the finished series; we could also recommend the series there. I, myself, would take a recommendation, but, not use it until all the books are published. sometimes too much time lags between books and to hard to recall last books read, in a series. only a suggestion

I was thinking we'd only consider completed series. We have started a number of series in our group-read, but some of us don't get to finish the series.
