SOLVED. Shapeshifters, multiple animals; book had a Native American feel; - 1980's - Series [s]

When I was in Middle/High school (1984-1990) I read a series of books about shapeshifters. I believe there were several different animals involved and I kind of remember a Native American feel to it, though that wasn't explicit. Other than that, I remember that the covers we kind of a gray or tan forming a frame/border for the cover image.

I know it isn't much to go on, but I figured I would give it a shot.

What were the shapeshifters DOING? Were they solving crimes, fighting aliens, keeping humans safe or trying to take over the world?

I don't remember much of the plot, but it was a more classic fantasy, maybe with some political intrigue.

I mostly remember really enjoying the books and being on the lookout for more in the series. I guess I'm just feeling a bit nostalgic lately.

That's it! I don't remember how many of the books I had read, but I may have to start scrounging them up now.
