Live in CT but used to subscribe to Washington Post Book Review when I could get it by mail. Love to read all types of books and about to retire so looking forward to spending more time enjoying both old fashioned books from the library and ebooks. Loved Beautiful Ruins - great choice!
Hey, I'm Sydney. I was just looking for an interesting book club to join and I ended up here! I love reading and right now I'm challenging myself to read 52 books in a year, 1 book a week. Discussing literature with people is one of my favorite things to do so I'm looking forward to commenting here.
I live in the literary mecca of Iowa City, Iowa, and love to read mainly fiction in my spare time. I have tended to shy away from book clubs because I often want to read books that strike my fancy at a particular time, rather than reading an "assigned" book. I also love to discuss literature, and was intrigued by this book club, and the first book, and thought I'd give it a try.
Hey everyone! I'm Caitlin Dewey and I'm a reporter at the Post. I've had Beautiful Ruins on my reading list for quite some time -- looking forward to discussing it with you guys! (And also getting in another book for my Goodreads reading challenge ... I'm WAY behind this year.)
I'm Trish, a retired teacher (but still teaching). I liked the "flap" for this book so I bought it. I spend way too much time on the Internet, so my reading has suffered quite a bit. The other day I saw this group-where else :). Anyway, here I am to enjoy this literary journey with others,
I'm Danica Boutté. I love to read and write. I'm the the DMV hoping to meet like minded readers. If you'd like to read my first book, it's free on Amazon until 7/15.
Hi I am also Jane. JaneG will do. I retired about two and a half years ago and couldn't wait to start reading for me-for pleasure. I am a retired high school English teacher so for thirty nine years everything I read I searched for ways to approach it in class to a group of teenagers. Now when I had the time to read I found it difficult to read my eyes were strained then I discovered the Nook and romance novels. I guess the only books that I had read that could be classified as romance were The Scarlet Letter and Gone With the Wind. Then I got hold of the Fifty Shades Trilogy. Then Brenda Jackson and her Westmoreland series. I then read Ann Rices interview with the Vampire trilogy and so on and so on. For the past nine months I have averaged a book a day. Then a friend Trish invited me to join here and I am thrilled. What a great book to start with. I am looking forward to read And share. I
I was a bookworm as a kid and I moved to Seattle in part because I saw people reading everywhere--on buses, in cafes, even walking around Green Lake. I'm a retired writer and occasional designer and I still love to buy books. I even read some of them! I love coming-of-age stories, literary nonfiction, biographies of admirable and little-known people, autobiographies of people whether they are admirable or not, histories of things like salt and tulips, and good detective and police procedurals, preferably in foreign countries. I'm in the middle of Susan Orleans book about Rin Tin-Tin, (a biography of sorts), just finished De Waal's "The Hare with the Amber Eyes" and will start "Beautiful Ruins" because I respect the editorial staff of the Washington Post. Always looking for the next good read...
Hello everyoneMy name is Diane and I live in Illinois, U.S.
Have been a book nerd all my life. Have seven children, only one of which is still home.
Read almost anything excepting anything with vampires, or zombies and I am not very fond of graphic novels.
Hi everyone--I'm Ami and I just joined the staff of Goodreads. I really enjoying talking about books with others, and I'm a bit of a voracious reader, so I'm game for discussing just about any titles here.
Hello. My name is Cissy & I live in Ft. Worth, Tx. I love reading & I thought this reading group would be interesting.
Hi all....Another Diane here. Like everyone else here, I've been a reader all my life. I taught literature at a small private liberal arts college in Michigan for many years as well as working actively as a freelance writer and editor. (Ever wonder who writes all those encyclopedia articles? Could be a middle aged woman working in her pajamas....) I've recently retired and now am devoting significant time to reading, reviewing, and trying to write poetry, probably the hardest thing I've done. I, too, have challenged myself to read a book a week this year, and began the year reading all of the nominations in the Rooster Tournament of Books. Looking forward to active discussions about interesting books.
Hi, I'm Anna and I live in Ellicott City, MD. I have always been an avid reader, have my degree in education and work as a children's librarian at the No. 1 Library System in the US (Howard County Library System). I'm looking forward to being in this group!
I'm Ron Charles, the Deputy Editor of The Post's book section. I also write a review each week and frequently post quirky book-related items on our website:

So nice to "meet" you all.
Stay tuned for the chance to talk with Jess Walter on a Google Hangout in August. This is something of an experiment for us, but it should be fun.
If you've got any questions about The Post's book coverage, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to get back to you quickly. Thanks, Ron

Hi, my name is Jutta, I'm from Berlin Germany. I'm a teacher at a vocational college. I recently read "Beautiful Ruins" and would like to know what other group members think about this novel. My favourite writers: Vladimir Nabokov, E.L. Doctorow, Ian McEwan, Julian Barnes, Robert Goolrick.
It's hard for me to post a wish for gruop's next book. as I live in Germany and I'm not that up to date with American books. Anyway I think that this is an interesting book group for me and I hope for good discussions and recommendations. Nice to meet you all!
Hi All,I am Heather, from Florida. I LOVE to read and have been a big reader all of my life. I also love to travel and that has really enriched my reading. I am really looking forward to the recommendations and discussions here. It looks like a very interesting Book group.

The Hare with the Amber Eyes has been on my reading list forever. Did you like it?
Hi everyone,I'm a cultural anthropologist and fiction writer living in Florida who occasionally writes book reviews for the Washington Post; here's my most recent one:

I have been wanting to read Beautiful Ruins anyway, so I was excited to discover that not only was there a Washington Post Goodreads group, but also that it was starting with this book. Can't wait to join in on the discussion.

Hi Janet, yes I liked The Hare with the Amber Eyes. It was a remarkable piece of research on De Waal's part and though I had little in common with the wealthy family portrayed I found myself intrigued by their fate and of course the fate of the little netsuke. My only complaint was that there were no pictures of the netsuke among the photos in the book.
Are you enjoying "Beautiful Ruins" so far?
Hi! I'm Ria, from Manila, Philippines. I went to school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. Though in hindsight, i wish i also pursued courses in writing, book editing.Happy housewife I am now, with two kids. I play badminton, but a knee injury has put that on hold for a few weeks during which time i can indulge my reading passion, for that is what brought me here.
Will look for Beautiful Ruins when I visit the bookstore.
Hi everyone, I'm Lindsay from Rockville, MD. I'm a special educator, teaching English grades 9-12 to students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.I am a regular reader of the Washington Post's book section, and get a great deal of my "to read" list from its reviews.
I'm looking forward to connecting with all of you and discussing some great books!
Hello, I am Stefanie from Clarksville, Maryland. As a long time WaPo Book Review devotee, I was drawn to this group. I read just about anything (except romance) but am particularly drawn to thrillers/mysteries, biographies, historical fiction, and non-fiction titles (mostly social science/psychological research topics). I have a horrendous commute into DC every day but the metro portion provides me daily reading time to help me reach my Goodreads goal of 50 books this year. I love twisty plots, surprises, and mash-ups. Looking forward to discussing some great books with everyone!
Nicholas from nairobi,kenya.I loves all book.my favorite great gatsby,jane eyre,great expectation,kite runner,book thief,the girl with a dragon tatoo
Hi, I'm Olivia from Volcano, Hawaii, and I'm entering my third year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I was drawn to this group because I saw that the cover of the book that you're reading, Beautiful Ruins, is in Cinque Terre, a place I recently visited and fell in love with on Study Abroad in Florence. It piqued my interest, and I was looking for a book club to join, anyway. :)I love having people to talk to about a book I've just read, so I'm looking forward to discussions!
Hello evryone, I'm Rajeshree and from Malaysia . I love reading chik lit ,romance ,general and literature, I'm currently on my semester break so,trying to catch up on books that I have missed. I would be glad to be introduced to new and interesting books.:)
Hi my name is Karen. I seem to be different from the other members. I read about 85 books a year, but would never consider myself an avid reader. I joined this group to get some good suggestions for future reads from a really good source. My only request would be not to select books "hot off the press" as I get most of my books from the library and the wait on the latest & greatest can be months. Looking forward.......
My name is Terrie. Been an avid reader for a long, long time. My family knows that when I am in the grip of an enjoyable read everything else disappears. Just stumbled on this group, joined because the read looked interesting. I am from SC in the #5 city on the new list from Kiplinger, a pet rescue advocate and the proud owner of a German Shepherd Dog.
Hi, I'm Lori. I've always been a self proclaimed bookworm! I'm a first grade teacher. I have a Siamese cat named Mocha that I adopted when she was two months old, and now she's a four year old happy, healthy cat that I love dearly! I started my own bookclub in my hometown a few years ago, so I could have discussions about the books that I read and others read. I also like to write creatively - both fiction and poetry. This afternoon I picked the book Beautiful Ruins up at the library and I'm ready to curl up and read it.

I'm David, I've lived in Austin for the past five years. It gets too hot here in the summer. It probably gets too hot just about everywhere in the summer these days. I'm late to the Beautiful Ruins reading - I actually just picked it up today. But I have to say, I'm already taken by it. I know this is introductions, not the book discussion thread - it's nice to read everyone's blurbs. And now I get to stare at a small illuminated screen too late into the night with eyes that feel wrecked from staring at screens for too many years. But I've got a good book to read, so it's okay.
I'm Diane, I am from Kansas City. However, I am currently living in Sydney, Australia for 2 years for my husband's job. I am a physical therapist. However, I am taking a sabbatical and being a stay at home mom during the time we are living overseas. I have read Beautiful Ruins and enjoyed it. But, I didn't enjoy it as much as many other people have. I thought that this would maybe help me find a new appreciation for the book that I somehow missed when reading it. The next book that I was already planning on reading is All That I Am by Anna Funder. It looks like it would be a great book club read.

Hi Lindsay, glad to know about your thoughts and we should recommend the good stuff.
Hello everyone, I'm Amy from Connecticut. I'm a writer and editor by training and occupation; I currently work in public relations at a university. Because I spend my entire day staring at words, I am picky about the books I read for enjoyment. If I'm not engrossed in a book by page 100, out it goes! I like fiction and nonfiction (particularly history and current events) and I don't care for science fiction or romance novels. I love having an outlet to discuss books with other avid readers like myself.
I try to make it that far. If I'm really struggling, though, I've given up sooner. But it has to be really bad for me to throw in the towel that early. I have been pleasantly surprised in the past by books that I almost gave up on in the first few chapters but ended up liking in the end.
Yes, this is especially true of classics. Everything started slower back then. The idea of a "hook" was a not-yet-invented MFA opium dream....
Hello everyone! My name is Courtney and I'm excited to join my first book club on Good Reads. An editor immediately after college, I have now made my way into the nonprofit sector and miss my days of reading and writing. Excited to get back on board with a great group!
Hey, I'm Ruth. Still feeling my way through Goodreads... My love of books led me to studying English and French literature in university; unfortunately, my studies turned me off books for a good number of years. Am reading again, have been for many years, but books just don't enthrall me the way they used to -- or should I say, they rarely do. I'm hoping that by sticking with it, I'll be able to regain my lost paradise one day. I don't have a book suggestion for this group just yet; will think about it.
Hello. My name is Janet from Ohio. I love to read so I thought I would try out a bookclub. I also needed a reason to move Beautiful Ruins up on my reading list! I would like to add And the Mountains Echoed to our prospective list. Hearing good things about it.

Hi, Ruth, Stick with it. There's nothing more rewarding than making friends with a wonderful book. What topics intrigue you? Historical fiction? Mysteries? Cooking? Maybe we'll be able to find the right kind of book for you.

Currently on page 42 and enjoying it so far. It's going to be hard for Hosseini to top The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, though!
Hi. My name is Molly, I love to read all kinds of books so much so I became a librarian! My favorite books, however, are generally science fiction. Looking forward to this group's discussions.
Hi all, my name is Simon Duringer.
I am a reader and writer from across the pond in Blighty! I hope to find this as a useful forum to hear of new books and authors from the US.

Hi, Amy and Janet,
Here are two suggestion for you: Louise Erdrich's "Round House" (which won the National Book Award last year) and Tan Twan Eng's "The Garden of Evening Mists" (short-listed for the Man Booker Prize). Both books offer the emotional power of Khaled Hosseini's books, weaving in compelling characters. First class literature, both of them. If you read them, tell us what you think.
