I agree with you - debate used to be based on fact, argument, persuasion - in fact there use to be debating clubs in college, high schools around the country. And it did not mean that you hated your opponent - it was a way to bring out all of the facts and details of both sides of an argument - I miss the debates that the League of Women Voters use to sponsor with the Presidential candidates. Everything seems to have degraded.
