Yes, the reading ribbon is a real privilege.. That may become starting point for an in-depth review, since it will make me more attuned to the novel...!!

Good to see you back, Zenmoon... take your time...
The overall schedule is already published and this week I shall open the threads for the weekly readings.

I can sense a double-blind study, waiting to be conducted, on the impact of the reading ribbon on GR reviews.

I read The Magic Mountain last year and thought it was excellent.
I am unlikely to be able to join you in this group read, but I hope to follow the discussions.

:) I'll be using a leather bookmark too most likely so maybe you can find a couple of those!

Anyway, I've bought

I hope you post lots of quotes, Karen so we get to compare our translations with the original.
My copy arrived today, complete with gold ribbon. Sorry, Diane....

I second Fionnuala's opinion. It will be wonderful to have quotes from the original.
Karen, I also have that German edition with the nice cover, but this time I will read TMM in English, but will love to keep pace with your quotes.
My German friend, having heard I was reading BB in English, just sent me the German edition (which I already had...!.. so I have one copy extra now..)

Diane, some of us may have a gold ribbon, but you deserve this:

It's a bit of a challenge for me as most of my previous experiences with Mann's books (Tonio Kroeger, Death in Venice, and Buddenbrooks) have been somewhat aggravating. (I enjoyed his brother's books, though.)
I would like to give TMM a shot, though, because I remember being read an excerpt of it some years ago by someone who didn't want me to give up on Mann - and I remember being very drawn in by the excerpt. Also, it has been many years since I read them and it will be interesting to see if my appreciation of Th. Mann's work changes.
It will be the Fischer Klassik (Kindle) edition for me - not as heavy. Happy to help with questions on translations.

We are very glad you will be joining us. There are several members who feel some trepidation with Mann and may be why tackling him in a group is a good idea.
At least Karen will also be reading it in the original.

Thanks.
BTW, love the schedule. It looks really well thought out and manageable.

Brilliant. My copy of Buddenbrooks is in Fraktur. Even though I didn't care for the story much, I love my old copy of the book.
Happy reading!

Good for you.. yes, there is quite a bit of arbitrage in the sales of second hand books.

Manuscripts don't burn!

Ohhhh NICE.
The Ignoble Barn downtown didn't have the Everyman hardback Zauberberg so I went for the Vintage paperback instead, which is nice but there are.....no notes! and of course no reading ribbon. Then again, I have sadly given up on pretty books with reading ribbons because my cats inevitably find them and chew them into rags.

Crazy as it might sound, for bookmarks, I often use postcards that were sent to me from the corresponding countries that the author's from or setting. So hopefully one of my well traveled friends has been to Germany in the past few years!
I'm probably going to go with the Everyman edition since it sounds as if it includes notes.

No, I just looked and don't see any in the Everyman text. There aren't any endnotes and in a quick look I don't see any in the text. There is an introduction and Everyman always places the author and novel in it's historical context, which I really like.

I have not read it yet, but the introduction is by A.S. Byatt..

Good to know there are no footnotes there either Kalliope. So we're missing nothing then. I'm looking forward to Byatt's intro.

Mikki, I'm sure that something could be arranged there! If you would care to, you could send me a pm with your address....

In a way I do something a bit similar as the leather bookmarks I use were all bought on vacations.

BYATT? MAN. Maybe I can read it via excerpts on de Nile....(I love, love love her intros. Also sister Margaret's.)

Tomorrow is the official finishing day for the Group read of Buddenbrooks. Given the interest that most of you have expressed in continuing reading more books by Thomas Mann, Kris and ..."
I am pleased that the group is reading The Magic Mountain. I am not participating because I read this a few years back (The Woods translation). This is my favorite Mann novel.
By the way, there is a very interesting and very long (329 minutes)movie adaptation of this with Rod Steiger if anyone is interested. It is rather obscure. I believe that I got it from Netflix and it is in German with subtitles.

Thank you William,
Yes, I have that filmed version, and your post reminds me that I have not posted it in the Thread we have for TMM on Film.
I think in the US it is available in what may be an abridged version, with subtitles.
According to the description in the link below, the edition has 2 DVDs and lasts for 153 minutes. I ordered it first until I realized it had cuts and then canceled it.

The edition I ordered from Germany has 4 discs and lasts for 475 minutes including the Bonus.
I will post this in the relevant thread.

Oh yes, and the costumes!! Now if it were BB, John Waters could be Christian I suppose unless he were Tom, playing against type.
