Did the whole brains thing come from the Return of the Living Dead movies? Haven't seen those in a long time but can't really think of anywhere else that zombies just ate brains.

I've read a few books where zombies eat delicious brains. Not that I can name them offhand, but they were mostly indie. Oh, and a number of them were from the zombie POV.

On an unrelated note, or maybe partially related note, I have a health food book that actually has a recipe for brains. Calf brains, but brains nontheless. Anyone want to come over for supper?

REturn of the living dead was the first time that zombies ate brains.

message 4: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 84 comments Jim is correct. All the other references to "brains" in later movies/books were based on RofLD.

message 5: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments RofLD was also different in that there was no way to really kill an undead other than burning it into ash, but then you still had to dispose of the ash properly.

But at least they provide a reason why the zombies were after brains -- it eased the pain of being dead.

Steven (tbones) | 92 comments Well, in Return Of The Living Dead the corpse lady on the slab explained why they ate brains. Cause it helps the pain of being dead go away...However I think it is interesting that the teeth of a corpse can crunch right through the top of the skull. Those be some powerful chompers.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) You know there was a time that mankind thought the sun revolved around earth! But now know better.;)
I believe this misunderstanding is similar, through closer observations and scientific research mankind has gained a better understanding of eating habits of zombies :-)

message 9: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 92 comments ya know why they asked for more cooooooops?

How did a Confederate soldier know how to use a CB? Or know that word?

message 11: by David (new)

David Rogers | 5 comments Because when they bend over they tend to fall over. Brains are in the head, heads are up near zombie mouths, that's how they roll.

Of course, once they've fallen over, all bets are off. They'll eat it all.

Why do zombies eat brains...
The pain of being dead... I can feel myself rot
Eating brains how does that make you feel?
It makes the pain go away...

Anton (antontroia) | 59 comments It's a metaphor. A zombie bites someone, infects them, and basically takes over the mind of a person, or their brain. Removing all of their personality and humanity all together.

Every time I see this topic come up in my email I think "Because they're delicious!". That's bad, right?

It's as good an explanation as any.

It is difficult to believe this thread is still alive. But I guess, "Inquiring Minds want to know".
Yeah that was cheesy but no more then the movie. ;)

Richard Dietz | 39 comments I loved "Tar Man" from ROTLD who just wanted BRAINS!!! That guy freaked me out as a kid.

Why do they eat them? Likely they have solid nutritional value =)
