Roseann | 66 comments Hello everyone,

I really like the idea of this challenge, but I want to make sure I have it right.

I get that we pick a book, read it and then find out what shelves it is on. Where I get confused is the next step; do we then pick a shelve that that book is on, read it and find shelves that book is on that the first one wasn't; or do we find a book that is NOT on the shelves the first book was and so on...

Hope I worded this ok and haven't confused others ;-).

Thanks for any help!

1. To have read a book off a shelf, you must read a book that is found on that particular shelf. ie. to have read book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on "classics" shelf. For example, Pride & Prejudice is on the top of this shelf: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show?shel...

2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the first 5 pages of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find Pride & Prejudice are found on the following shelves: http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves/18... however we will only count the first 5 pages of listed shelves for this challenge (note: this is to make it easier for everybody as P&P is found on 70 pages of shelves!)

3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order of shelves.

4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below).

6. It is permissible to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted; just ignore those when you are tracking them.

7. We will continue to report as we have already been doing with number of shelves touched and books read.

8. I was not going to do this for prizes, if that is okay. Just for fun!! I also did not add a penalty, unless you (group members) think we should continue with doing that. It is just fun to see how many shelves you can touch!!

So after you read a book click on the link for the book and look to the right where it says popular shelves. Click on that link and use the first five pages of shelves to find if your book touched any of the shelves listed above. If so, mark these shelves off. Now keep in mind that you may read another book that touches the same shelf, but you would not count it again.
Does this help?

message 3: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 66 comments I think I have it. So I do not have to link the books together in any way, I just need to try and "touch" as many shelves as I can. Correct??

message 4: by Angela (new)

Angela That is right.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Can someone give me an example? I am so lost!!!

message 6: by Cam (last edited May 14, 2009 11:55AM) (new)

Cam Okay Sarah, say you've decided to read Where Is the Green Sheep? By Mem Fox. < Click on this link, then at the bottom right hand side of screen under 'popular shelves' is a heading 'more shelves', click, now every shelf that's on the first five pages of shelves for this book (easy for this book as it only has 5 pages) that corresponds exactly with Angela's list at the top of this post is counted as a 'shelf touched'.
eg. The first 11 shelves on the first page of Where Is The Green Sheep read as

to-read Doesn't Count
picture-books TOUCHED
childrens TOUCHED
children-s-books TOUCHED
picture-book TOUCHED
children TOUCHED
storytime NOT TOUCHED
read-alouds NOT TOUCHED
theme---sheep WHAT? NOT TOUCHED
format---picture-books NOT TOUCHED
fiction TOUCHED

So for this example, you've touched 6. You would then continue this process for the first 5 pages of the books shelves of Where Is The Green Sheep to get your total for this book. You copy the process for all further reads, however the shelves that have previously been touched are eliminated and don't get counted again. So as you eliminate shelves it becomes increasingly difficult to score points.
I hope this helps & was the sort of example you were talking about? If not I totally understand and there is a Karen's Pride & Prejudice example around here somewhere, that she's 'touched' the shelves in BOLD print (I don't know how to do that, I can only do CAPITALS).

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Cam... would it be alright for me to try one... message you my results and see if I did it right?

Ok, I think I saw the answer to this question somewhere, but can't find it now. The May shelf is science fiction, so--if we read more than one book for our monthly shelf, can we count them both for the shelf-a-thon, or only the first one?

message 11: by Cam (new)

Cam All your monthly reads count towards your shelf a thon total Lyn. There was a rule in the first series that applied to additional reads from the monthly shelf, but due to much confusion it has been dropped from the shelf a thon rules. So every book you read counts to your total.
