Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall (taelianaofthewind) | 21 comments I have to put in a word of my utter adoration of Hamlet, and Twelfth Night. Shakespeare was an opportunist, certainly, but wrote some of the most marvelous plays in the history of literature.

We saw Twelfth Night in person and I still have good memories regarding that. :D.

I've always wanted to watch a Shakespearian play live...

@Theodosia, I love Twelfth Night, and I haven't even seen it live. :)

Jazzy (stairstepjitters) | 62 comments It's always fun to read old English and step back into a different time, but I've found that Shakespeare works better in a production such as a movie or live play (as they were intended to be). They miss a lot of the drama and emotion when you're just reading the play. I enjoy the adaptations though that put them in a more story-telling form.

“If music be the food of love, play on” -- {from Twelfth Night – Act 1, Scene 1}

Here's an interesting thought :

Most scholars emphasize the importance of analysing the songs in Shakespeare's plays in terms of their dramatic context.
Commentators frequently treat Shakespeare's songs not as interruptions or delays in the dramatic action, but as a means of enhancing characterization and narrative development!

What a beautiful quote! And I'm certainly intrigued by that interesting thought you posted - it made me re-evaluate some of the works I've read that have had songs in them and what their impact is :)
