message 101: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments I agree Jenna, the way he did it was like how she came to her name. I loved it. Oh, and yea the emotional connection with Dennis Mira was really great. So was Eve sharing with Delonna.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
I love this reminiscing Eve is doing of past Christmases. Her ice skating with Mavis was heartwarming.

message 103: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments Oh! And she actually used the word "shop" too. Our Eve is getting to be so grown up lol. I loved the whole Mavis connection in this book. Her history, their history, why she was so fearful of being a bad mom...I really think this was the best storyline she has had except of course for Born.

Sandi - Protester of Goofreads (sfussner) Only a couple of chapters in. I also thought immediately of DeWinter & Morris, but I've never thought of Baxter & Nadine, that would be prime! Could you imagine how well Dallas would handle that - lots of laughs for us.

I could really see Nadine and Baxter. It really seems like a good fit. They would keep each other on their toes.

Deanna | 1 comments Did anyone else feel like Dr. DeWinter was a little too similar to Dr. Isles in Rizzoli and Isles with a bit of Bones thrown in? Fashion plate who had a 'nerd-herd' of scientists in DC?

Good description!

message 108: by [deleted user] (new)

Potential for a few new members to the outskirts if Eve's family. DeWinter, Lonna, her "helper" at HPCCY, Mavis' Fegan.

Sandi - Protester of Goofreads (sfussner) OK, I just read where Roarke talked about the ugly coat that The Button came off of that he carries in his pocket. I could swear it was the suit she wore that it came off of. I know what book that's in, but I'm not going to look it up now.

message 110: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments It was the suit it came off of...definitely an "oops". I caught it as well, because he asked where Mavis had gotten the ugly coat Eve borrowed.

Sandi - Protester of Goofreads (sfussner) Dawn wrote: "It was the suit it came off of...definitely an "oops". I caught it as well, because he asked where Mavis had gotten the ugly coat Eve borrowed."

Wow, that's the first major faux pas she's made, that I know of, in the 20 or so years of writing this series. Thanks Dawn, at least now I know it's 'not me'.

message 112: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Harte (jennaharte) Well it was the coat of a suit right? Suits have a coat, like a blazer and pants or a skirt. That's how I read it. BTW... I love the button. So sweet.

message 113: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments The suit was Eve's. But she borrowed Mavis' coat, it was too small and was never described as "ugly". The "ugly" suit popped up again in Glory and was missing the button. Eve and Roarke were broke up at the time of the funeral.

Sandi - Protester of Goofreads (sfussner) "A guy of about twenty with ink black hair hacked into an airboarder chop at the counter". Does anyone know what the heck this is? Thanks

She's made several errors:
1. Calling Morris "Morse" in two books
2. Introducing Harvo, the fiber specialist and then referring to her as Harpo in the last two books.
3. There was an error in this book, near the end where she stated "Monty" instead of "Nash"

The Morris/Morse is listed as errata on her J. D. Robb website.

I didn't see that until you mentioned it. She and Eve are gonna bump heads down the road.

Don't throw tomatoes at me.....

I thought this one was a little boring. I loved the Mavis moments where her story was really revealed for the first time and Eve's obvious emotional growth moments (how she handled Lonna, her reaction to Dennis Meara and subsequent explanations to Roarke). The mystery was just flat for me. I guessed who had killed the girls from the beginning. The procedural for this one had a bit of repetition. I struggled through the last two chapters.

Sorry...I'm normally 4 or 5 stars for these books.

message 118: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments I think because we are very used to lots of action happening, this one seemed slower. But I liked the whole so much, I was okay without the action. Also, we knew who the bad guy was, just not if he was alive or if so where, so there really wasn't a lot of thinking to do.

Thank you for that! I so agree, this for me, was a 'meh'. That, plus the errors in the book has pretty much convinced me that this will be my last Robb/Roberts book.

message 120: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments Oh no, she would have to make Roarke into a womanizing asshole to get me to stop reading.

@Jonetta, was the Morris/Morse thing Nora or an editing issue?

I also hear from some reviews that there are some major editing issues in the hardcover.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
No way will it be my last as I've enjoyed most of the last few. This one just didn't do it for me.

Dawn, I read these books first for the mystery/suspense so when that falls flat, the other elements have a greater burden in providing some balance. Unfortunately, the relationships and other characters didn't assume that burden.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
Regarding errors in the book...

Here's where we are seeing the cost shaving in the publishing industry. It's not just a problem for self-published authors. Major publishers have shrunk their ranks and I fear they're having copy editors also assume responsibility for the proof reading. I'm seeing this stuff routinely in books published by the top ten houses.

What a shame.

The Morris/Morse is a continuity issue. Nora should have definitely caught this as it was near the beginning of the series. However, her editors should have DEFINITELY caught this.

I found a few errors in the eBook.

message 124: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments I do think that at the cost of her books, her people should catch more than they are. If one of her fans can catch the errors so immediately, they should as well.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
I've added the cast list to the first message in this topic.

message 126: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments Another biggie was when Dr Mira's parents were divorced and she was molested by her stepfather. Then in another book, they had a great marriage. Then in another book NR fixed it by explaining they got back together. Lol

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
I do remember that one!

message 128: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments I laugh every time I re-read that particular book. I forget which is which now.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
It's a fairly recent one, isn't it? Like Celebrity maybe?

message 130: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments It might be. Eve is upset with Mira and tells her it is natural for her to lie to create a connection with a patient. Mira is offended that Eve thinks she has lied to her so Eve goes through the whole thing and Mira explains she attempted suicide and that brought her parents back together. Seems easier to just have people to read to make sure she isn't making these errors. Anyone in this group could catch most of those types of mistakes. My sister-in-law writes erotica and has at least one series. She says she has a hard time getting people to commit to a series, so maybe that is an issue.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
She's got a fan base that would do it for free!!!!

message 134: by Sheri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sheri Morell (smorell22) | 2165 comments Finished the book this morning and all though it isn't in my top 5 I did really enjoy the book...Normally I do really enjoy the mystery and I was able to pick out the killer pretty early on. I really enjoyed the more personal aspects of the book. Eve and Mr. Mira especially that just makes me smile. Eve has come such a long way since the beginning of the series.

message 135: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I stayed up all night and read it. I learned a lot about forensics, and I laughed until I cried in the scene with Bella. It's about half way through.

Azleen, do you realize you've already rated it 4 stars?

message 138: by Shari (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shari | 7 comments I just finished this one and I have mixed feelings about the ending. I enjoyed the book, and loved the character connections. Could Eve have to make room for yet ANOTHER friend? But, it left me with some questions.

Initially, I found myself kinda wishing Eve had just left things as they were in a way. But if you look at it from the families of the victims, I guess it had to go the way it did. I just felt sad when I closed the book on this one - and not just because I have to wait for the next one.

message 139: by Azleen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Azleen errr..ok that's weird, Jonetta..mistep somewhere perhaps?

You've apparently rated it in error. You can just go to the book and clear the rating field.

You mean not tell the parents/families about finding the children's remains?

message 142: by Shari (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shari | 7 comments Jonetta wrote: You mean not tell the parents/families about finding the children's remains?

Oh no, I think that the notifications were entirely necessary. People need to know what happened to their loved ones no matter what. I was thinking more along the lines of the murderer. I believe I am all hard line when it comes to crime and such, but in this case, I am not sure I would have followed through with the legal process if I had been Eve. It seemed to me that it was resolved. However, the families of the victims deserve their day in court and have a right to know that he is being punished. This is one of those situations, where I believe I am more of a Peabody than a Dallas.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
Oh, I understand. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, she had to convince herself that he really was mentally unbalanced. After all, it took a lot of plotting to pull this off. On the other hand, the only thing that changed was the venue for his incarceration and a well-meaning, good doctor probably lost his license.

Tough call. Thanks for raising this point.

message 144: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments From a law enforcement point of view...even the mentally ill must go through the court process...for the protection of the community. There is no way to tell if he will decide another girl is bad and needs cleansed. So, having the court commit the person ensures he stays where he cannot hurt anyone else.

Another good point.

message 146: by Carol (last edited Feb 25, 2014 01:21PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Carol (carolmo) I really enjoy the characters in this series, but each story while different has the same routine regarding the procedure of the investigation. IMHO, I would like to see something new to add a spark to the series.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15074 comments Mod
I think I do, too, Carol. Maybe that's why the investigation bored me.

message 148: by Quynh (new) - rated it 4 stars

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Finally finished. I rated it 4 stars but mainly for the characters themselves. Eve, Roarke and the gang saved the book for me. I figured out the killer halfway through even though there was more to it than that so that was new to me. Here's my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

Yes, PLEASE! But what would it be? I cannot even imagine Eve becoming a mother. :-0 It would really shake things up if she killed another character, although, I would hate that.

message 150: by Quynh (new) - rated it 4 stars

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments For whatever reason, I really want to see a plot where the killer targets Eve and kidnaps her. Yes it would be hard because Eve is so kickass. But say, she's chasing him down on her own, and he gets the upper hand by tranqing her, and takes her to some remote location. Her link is destroyed, Roarke and the EDD team can't track her. The rest of the team works to find her location. Meanwhile, Eve uses her wit to stay alive.

Eve has always been at the forefront of an investigation. So it'll be interesting to see her on the other side (not dead mind you, just unable to get help or find clues).
