Susie Frida wrote: "what was frida portraying in this painting?"

At the point this painting was done, Frida moved on from aiming at realism done in the tone of Mexican art to delve in her self-portraits to include her internal self, perhaps more broken and in pain than her body.

Shivaji Das It is interesting how Frida Kahlo's art is rather unaffected by the social realism that was proscribed for fellow communists.

Susie I disagree. In the 1932 "Self Portrait on the Border Line Between Mexico and the United States"is filled with social realism symbolism, from the left side of the painting or the more or less Mexican side, flowers with deep roots, ancient sculptures, her holding the paper Mexican flag and even her traditional old-fashioned clothing speak to an innocence while the right side or American side has a Ford air polluting factory, flat sky scrapers, a siren, loudspeaker and flood light. This is just one example of her social impact paintings done in the 30s.
