They were fleeing from perhaps some kind of uprising? I believe she was an heir of some kind, or at least being hunted due to lineage.
Was there a younger male character in it who may have been a guard or some sort of relation to the "greybeard"? If so, I think I might have read this.
Don't remember but it's not a long shot. Better control meant more intense/smaller balls of magic.
Mr greybeard also had a sword.
I haven't read it, so I'm not sure what the story behind the cover is, but the cover of Maria V. Snyder's Storm Glass is a picture of (presumably) a girl holding some sort of ball of magic in her hands.
Close but no cigar sir. My book was based in a medieval type setup. swords candles horses.. those times.oh where oh where did those books go!!! :(
I'm going to throw this one out there, but I'm not exactly convinced - The Silent Tower by Barbara Hambly. Hambly wrote a few with greybeard type wizards.
"The Black Prism" does have colored balls of magic and "fleeing from an uprising" early on, and the hue of light does indicate the magician's innate skill, but I don't remember a sword-wielding grey-hair protecting a girl. It's been a while, maybe I've simply forgotten that part. Do you remember a timid young man as protagonist?
How about The Ruins of Ambrai by Melanie Rawn and the second book is called The Mageborn Traitor - they create "mageglobes" as part of the magic system. One of the characters, Cailet (teen girl), is mentored by Gorsha, who is an old man.
I came across a book that sounded good not too long ago, not sure how many pages there are but the cover made me think of your book. Not sure if this is it but the title is The Warble

I read one book in a series regarding magic users who 'used' their magic via making little balls of it in their hands. Different colours were relevant to the aptitute of the magic user.
I also remember some older 'greybeard' type character keeping a younger girl safe.
Never remembered or found the book(s) again.. :'( help
