Anyone can join if they have time!more people the better right! - I tried to post this like 50 time but I wouldn't post :(
Matched seems pretty interesting, but I noticed that there are a lot of low ratings of it here in Goodreads. Do you guys think it's worth buying? ^_^
Jamira wrote: "Matched seems pretty interesting, but I noticed that there are a lot of low ratings of it here in Goodreads. Do you guys think it's worth buying? ^_^"Hi Jamira. I think so. I see a lot of high ratings on other sites so I think I'll give it a whirl. Also, I think the description sounds fascinating.
Ooh. Thanks, Mary! :) I've been wanting to read this book for awhile now. The plot seems to be intriguing and the cover gives it a lot of plus points! Cute cover. ;) Can't wait to give this a try.
@Jamira. I've been looking and I'm still seeing decent ratings. I bought the book today. Yay! There will be 3 of us starting on the first!! :)
Hi Everyone, I'm SO looking forward to our Buddy Read. I'm new to the group, so this is my first one. Yay! I hope you all have the book. How do you all want to do this? Since I'm new, I'm open to suggestions. Here are the stats on the paperback:
366 pages
32 total chapters.
We could do so many chapters per day, or so many pages per day. If we did pages--we could do 40 or 50 per day. Is 40 too many? Too few? Let me know. That's what I'm thinking--40 pages.
Anyone?
Yes 40 pages a day sounds like the right amount! But since I will be reading this on my kindle and the pages will be different, can we divide it by chapters? So 366(pages) divided by 32(chapters) is 11.4375. So there are about 12 pages per chapter. So 40 divided by 12 equals 3.333. So 40 pages is about 3 chapters. :) So can we read 3 chapters every day? Is that ok with you guys? I am totally flexible so you can choose how many chapters you want to do every day :) IF we do 3 chapters a day and there are 32 chapters, then we will finish in 10.66 days. So, let's round to 11 days. We should be done by January 11 :) Let me know if I did any of the math wrong, math isn't exactly what you would call my strong subject!!!
But then again, this does not have to be final. You guys could change it!!! But since pages on my kindle are totally different, please let's make a goal per day with chapters.
@Tris 3 chapters sounds perfect! (I'm horrible at math so I'll trust your calculations. Lol). 3 chapters it is folks! :-)
I was planning to get it today (Jan. 1) but ended up empty-handed. It's out of stock in the bookstore we went to. I'll be buying the day after tomorrow. Hopefully I can catch up! I'm new to Goodreads, so this is also my first buddy read.
@ Jill, Kathryn and Jamira--It's a quick read so you should be able to catch up. We'd love to have you! The first three chapters went by very fast!
@Tris, I read my three chapters today as well. *(Spoilers if you haven't read the first 3) I'm very intrigued as to what the three pills are. I'm also intrigued by the world this story takes place in. It sounds like the Society controls absolutely everything, even the food they eat. Strange. I like it so far.
Yes it did. These chapters are short. Did you like it so far?
To me, Cassia seems like an arrogant character. I don't know why I think that, but yeah.
@Tris, I think Cassia is very naive and the first three chapters catches her in the throes of what she has waited for her whole life, so she definitely can seem arrogant. I think we'll see more depth to her as the story goes on though.
I've read 5 chapters so far not sure where I'm supposed to be!It's hard to put down :)
I do like Xander, haven't made a decision about Cassia yet
Reminds me a bit of Divergent already though I guess most future government-controlling stories are similar
Hmm that's fine I guess :) Marry and I are reading 3 chapters a day. So (at my place) it is Jan 2, so we are going to read up to chapter 6 today :) But the schedule doesn't work out for you, it's fine if you read more or less! :)
Hey guys! This book is really good! I have heard a lot about it, but I never new it would be THAT good. So... I was just reading the book, and I meant to stop at chapter 6. :) But then i just kept reading without paying attention to the chapter numbers :) And I read pretty fast... So in a matter of time I realized that I was WAY past chapter 6. :) So now I am on chapter 18!!! LOL. So I was thinking, do you want to cancel the reading schedule and just read at our own pace? And then we could discuss after we are all done with the whole book? I hope I didn't disappoint you in any way, Mary!!!! :)
@Tris. Lol. I had to force myself to stop at 6 because it's so darn good. I'm totally fine with reading at our own pace. I'll be skiing on Saturday and Sunday but will have some time to read tomorrow. So far I like how the author reveals more and more about the world in each chapter. Love it so far. I know Ky is going to be a major player and I'm eager to learn more about what his father did!
@Jill. it reminds me of Divergent in some ways too. So far though I think this world is more interesting. There are so many rules.
@Mary Yay! Ok then. I agree that this world is amazing. But The Society seems way too perfect. I mean I can't imagine living like that. Everyone dies at the age of 80, everyone gets matched to a person, and they even get designated food with personal nutrition values! The people don't seem to have any choice in anything. And according to other dystopias I have read, no "perfect" society ever stays perfect. There is always some type of revolution.
Omg guys Divergent world is soooooo much more amazing! I would rather live in Divergent than in Matched. I mean you can live based on your personality. And you have some choice at least. In Matched, you have absolutely NO choice. In Divergent you get to choose between 5 ways of life. Anyhow, Matched is a really good read. I love it.
I have a question. It may sound really stupid, but what is an aberration? :) That official said that Ky was an aberration.
@Mary Yes ikr it's really hard to stop reading Matched. Have fun skiing!
Well, that depends on when everyone finishes. But what I have seen happening in other BR's is everyone posts their progress every so often. Then when everyone in the group finishes, they discusses. This is only my 2nd BR in this group, so I am quite inexperienced:)
@Jamira You should definitely join in Matched is a great book! But I feel like this is a slow, light read. Nothing much happened between the start if the book and the middle :) but it is still amazing!
@Tris I'll be joining. No worries. ;) I just need to grab the book. Most of the bookstores I've gone to say that it's out of stock or that only the box set is available (can't afford! xD).
@Tris I googled "aberration" and it said its something that deviates from normal/typical. Or another said an abnormal alteration in ones mental state. I guess it just means he doesn't think like everyone else... maybe like divergent?
Maybe he's a bit rebellious or something :) I'm sure we'll find out!
@Tris, I agree with your thoughts. This world is SO controlled. I can't imagine what kind of people would allow themselves to be controlled in this manner. It makes me really wonder what happened to cause it all to be this way, and to cause the people to just accept it. Any other people would revolt and chaos would ensue. I think we're going to find out what happens when someone goes against the society. Cassia is, I think, going to do just that. We'll see!
And yes--an aberration. They've mentioned that Ky is one, but they've left us hanging about what it actually means. He was also given a horrible job--it's like a garbage man. But...he didn't do anything. His adopted father did, so I'm not clear yet as to why he is being punished for something his father did.
I'm LOVING this book so far! Tomorrow I'll be skiing but I'll read later at night. Cheers everyone and I hope you all join in. It's a fabulous book!
@Jamira, This is my first buddy read but I'm loving it so far. I think it will work fine if we all post our progress then have a more in-depth discussion when everyone is through. Shoot for the three chapters a day--more if possible. It's a great book!
@Jill & Mary Thanks, so that's what aberration means. I thought it would be something sexual, lol :) It kinda sounds like it :) @Mary Yes I LOVE this book. But we will probably find out the backstory of this world in Reached (#3) because that's the case in most dystopia trilogies like divergent.
Yes I wouldn't live like that even if someone forced me to.
I am in chapter 20 :). It is SUPER AMAZING!!!
Hmm now that I think about it, maybe I thought that because aberration sounds a lot like abstinence and abortion :)
@Tris, I'm eager to find out the whole mystery of Ky and why he has been outcast like he has.
I'm not to 20 yet--I'm around 12 or so but heading off to read more now. It's bedtime here--some good reading in bed is on the way. I live in Vermont and we had a HUGE snow storm here yesterday. It's super cold out. Time to turn on the electric blanket, snuggle up and read!
U have an electric blanket????? Lucky. I live in California. :) it's about dinner time over here Well, I guess we don't need an electric blanket over here, but still...........
@Mary I thought for Ky it was his biological father that did something "bad"? So that he's biologically an aberration. Could be wrong not sure. It's quite cold here as well, I'm in Montreal (in canada) and we've been hitting lows of -40 with the wind chill (which is apparently the same super cold temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit!).
@Tris super jealous of your warm weather! ;)
@Tris, I lived in California for 10 years and I remember those mild winters. Not anymore. Lol. We have so much snow that it's just plain silly!
Still reading...
@Jill, Owww---I never thought of this! I was thinking that his adopted father must have done something, but it makes total sense that it was, perhaps, his bio dad. Never even thought of that! Thanks. That makes a LOT more sense. Ky has secrets and I want to know what they are!
Off to read some more.
