419
question
Wasn't what I thought; was better!

Just finished "419" by Will Ferguson. What a brilliant concept and great read. But I would not have said that before reading the book. I thought, a book on the Nigerian email scam? Why bother? But now I know why the author bothered. This is not a conventional thriller; in fact, it's a rather literary work. Yet it's a page turner. Ironically, I heard the author interviewed on CBC Radio the other day: he said he originally envisioned the book as a comedy. Then he began his research and the muse took over.
I loved the book -- the characters, the stories, how they all come together -- and highly recommend it. Wonder what others think...

I thought it took too long to bring the threads together. Also, I felt the characters were poorly thought out, especially the Nigerian ones. They mostly acted outside of the characteristics the author attributed to them.
I felt the travel portion of the book was beautifully done. Will Ferguson really puts you in the middle of his scenes.
