Just a question...

Has anyone ever skipped to the back of the book, and decided not to read the rest of it. Either not finish it at all, or at least wait till the next book comes out? I'm curious if i'm the only one who's done this, I did it last night on a new series, and however much I regret doing it, i would also hate waiting another full year till the new one came out because i was so upset by what i found. I haven't done this in quite awhile, but i have done it before. Am i the only one?

I did this a couple days ago on the Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I guess I'll have to finish it after I'm done reading all the other books I got from the library, though. I stopped on page 322/418. Although the sequel is out, I just didn't want to continue if that was what I was going to have to read about.

All kidding aside, my answer really is no. I've never, ever, ever read the end of a book, even if I suspect there's going to be a cliffhanger. I just can't make myself do it. I don't want to know because I don't want my journey disrupted by knowing what happens.

I have (like others, I suspect) waited years for the next novel in a series to come out. I read Clan of the Cave Bear when it came out in 1980, and was instantly hooked. Each of the four books over the next 10 years was anticipated, devoured, and enjoyed immensely. Then, came the torturous wait for book five which was twelve years ! But the wait was worth it for me. (The next 9 years waiting for her last book sadly, were not.)

I just can't make myself peek at the back!

Yikes!! well then i'm taboo, cuz this isn't the first time and probably won't be the last however much i don't like doing it, it will happen again. I got 160 pages in and took a peek, and happened to hit the page that almost had me in tears, i was so upset by what i saw. I'm most likely very strange but i get very attached to the characters, and didn't like what i saw. I will read it, but i won't finish it then have to wait for a year for the new one to come out. I can't imagine waiting for 12 years

Aww..nah, I'm not judging you. Plenty of people do that. I just can't bring myself to peek. I have considered it many times, but once I'm well into a novel, I just push on.

yea i almost always do it, i feel so ashamed, i get so annoyed that i did it or else i flick through the pages. I ruin some of it for myself. but i keep doing it and my friends get so annoyed. but ah well

i did it with mockingjay because it was 1 in the morning and i am prone to crying when sad stuff happens so i wanted to make sure the ending was happy enough that i could read it in depth without drowning in a pool of tears in the process... i was only 12 when i read it though and i haven't skipped to the back since then :P

I do it sometimes. It really depends on how the book is going really. If I am bored with the book, then heck yea Ill skip but if it is so good I can't put it down then I'm going to devour every word.

Honestly, I always read the last couple of pages first. I'm ridiculously impatient, particularly when reading and I feel like I have to have ALLTHEINFORMATIONRIGHTNOW, so I jump ahead and then backtrack to where I really am, a lot. Especially if I'm worried a character is going to die, I'll jump ahead a small chunk to check or whatever. It's bad, but it really doesn't take away from my reading experience. It actually calms my anxiety level of when I start to panic about a character or a certain event. Haha

I always, always read the last page first. A) because I've always been one for spoilers, I love them! I always have to know whats going to happen before it does.
and B)ever since I saw When Harry Met Sally, I've justified it as in case I die before I finish the book like Harry says. Morbid, I know but it kind of makes me laugh.

I don't read the last part of mystery and suspense novels only. I peek at most of Young Adults novels's epilogues.

I have before. I used to just go to the very back and read the last sentence before even starting the book. I try not to do that anymore because it ruins things for me, but sometimes I can't really help it. It's a bad habit. :/

Edit: As an aside, when I purchased my hardback copy of The Deathly Hallows, the epilogue had a seal on it that I had to break to get into when I reached the end. I thought that was brilliant.

I used to read the back of books in the middle of books to make sure no one like died and nothing happens with their relationships and stuff but I would continue to read it even if it was bad because I would want to know how it happened that way... I only did that once with The Host. I read the back then skimmed until the place I was at...

See that's what happened with me I just happened to skip to the page where someone dies, I was soooo upset, I decided I couldn't finish till closer to the next books release. then I'll go back and find out where it all went wrong

Yeah and the bad thing was when I skipped to the back of The Host.
, I don't think there was a sequel... I don't so that anymore though. I learned that it just ruins the book for you at the very end. Though its kind had to do!

Wow. I am shocked by the number of people that do that regularly. My best friend always reads the last page first and it drives me INSANE!!!! I enjoy panicking over the characters, not knowing who will die and who wont. That's what makes the journey genuine. Honestly, I waited forever before reading the Hunger Games trilogy because someone accidently revealed one of the pivotal deaths from the last book. Knowing that information really upset me. I kept reading about a character, knowing that person was going to die. It was awful, I can't understand why someone would do that on purpose. Same thing happened with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Oh well, this is just my opinion.

I agree with you Salome, about the revealing plot twists in books others are reading. I hate that. I had that happen with the Infernal Devices third book, huge spoiler that someone let slip.
