Kressel Housman | 99 comments Now that you folks have read this, I recommend In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. Capote was the model for the character of Dill, and Harper Lee was research assistant for the book. Then I recommend Mockingbird, which is Harper Lee's bio, and the movies "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Hey Boo," "Capote," and "Infamous."

Jennifer | 285 comments Kressel,

In Cold Blood has been sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. This just gives me an incentive to tackle it before the end of summer. TY for the information.

I've been wanting to read In Cold Blood forever. I saw a documentary, I think it was "Mockingbird Story" or some such title. Interestingly, Lee was expected to go on and be a great author, but she didn't write anything of consequence again.

I probably wouldn't have written anything after either. To Kill a Mockingbirdis a masterpiece and anything she would have subsequently written would likely have paled by comparison. I will have to see if I can find the documentary you are referring to on youtube. Is In Cold Blood on our list?

Alana, I just checked our list and Breakfast at Tiffany'sis the only Capote on our list. I would love to read In Cold Blood in August if you are interested in doing a side read.

I've read this a while ago, and thought it was provoking and moving and really well crafted. My only thought is that I'm not sure it has necessarily aged well. I suspect that at the time the shock at the verdict would have been that it too time to come to a guilty decision. now the reader is shocked that they came to a guilty decision at all.
That doesn't detract from the emotional punch of the story, but it's a series of events that I struggle to connect with.

Ditto!

Britany Finished today. Honestly, can't believe how much of this book I had forgotten about since my initial read in High School. It was like reading a whole new book! I'm disappointed in myself for not even remembering the verdict!!

Renee I feel the same way Britany. I remember reading it and watching the movie in High School, but I didn't remember any of it so it was just like a new book for me too. I loved it!

Chinook I had to read TKaM in high school and back then, I recall not liking it (but I often disliked the books I was made to read, because I was a difficult teenager). I reread it maybe four years ago and almost cried while on the subway towards the end.
