Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) I'm going to finish up a mystery/thriller book today. I needed a break from fantasy/scifi for a bit.

Now I'm not sure what to read next. It'll either be Mistborn or The Hobbit, neither of which I've read before, and are the only two series I've got left after recently moving.

Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Martha (tilla) | 194 comments I'm re-reading (for the 4th time) Ring of Lightning by Jane Fancher. Absolutely wonderful stories (this is the first of a trilogy that includes Ring of Intrigue and Ring of Destiny) with great characters. My poor books are starting to wear out so I'm hoping they come out on Kindle soon

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished City of Bones yesterday. I actually enjoyed it. For some reason I didn't expect to? It's not perfect or anything or that original, but it was entertaining.

message 57: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Revelations of Zang, followed it up with Strange Days in Old Yandrissa (because it's a standalone short story by the same author, John R. Fultz), and started A Discourse in Steel by Paul S. Kemp.

I just finished River of Stars and it's the best one since The Lions of al-Rassan. A real 5 star book.

Martha (tilla) | 194 comments Finished Ring of Destiny for the 4th time. Trying to figure out how to get Jane's newest for my Kindle since it's not coming in hardcopy for a while. I'm just worried I'll screw something up trying to download the thing

message 70: by Katey (new)

Katey Hmm.. So Tawny Man is the name of a different series and it is in the Farseer world?

Yep . . . sequel

message 72: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) I read Poison Studyand started reading Untimed. However I just couldn't continue after 20%.. it seemed too slow. I might get back to it later..
It took me a while to find what to read next (I hate when that happens) and ended up starting Clockwork Angel, so far its fast pace and I'm enjoying it..

Thanks for the link! I just started Tawny Man a few weeks ago (in the middle of #2 now). Really, really thought highly of Ship of Destiny. Tawny Man has been enjoyable as well.

Great to see these books mentioned for a change. The series is altogether overlooked, sad to say.

No kidding! Absolutely cannot imagine why the big publishers haven't snapped the new ones up.

How come you skipped the Ship trilogy? I'm reading the last two Dragon set in August. And I'll add the Kay book too I guess.

Actually, a lot of books of this quality and caliber fall between the cracks. Not enough word of mouth, fast enough, and there's no incentive (profit) for the publisher to continue. To make it harder, when this series was first published, there was no ready market -'interesting magic systems' was not a buzz word in the genre. It wasn't a quest or coming of age, and it had so much stark invention, that sort of originality has to create its own following, and for the pace of today's market expectations, it didn't happen fast enough.

If you ever heard of Rosemary Kirstein's Steerswoman series, it hit a similar wall. That one is slowly being rediscovered from obscurity and one can hope, Jane Fancher's Ring series can do the same thing. It's certainly quality writing and a wonderful story.

message 84: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I finished A Discourse in Steel -- fun sword & sorcery from the old school -- and started Robert Jackson Bennett's The Company Man, which has me intrigued at the first chapter -- I thought it was going to be another Depression-era dark fantasy/horror story like Mr. Shivers, but I'm getting hints that it might actually be set in some kind of alternate reality. Either way I'm looking forward to it.

I certainly hope so. Love these books; love the characters and love the whole world she's built.
