Hi, everyone!I'm Kristen, and like some others around here, I just published my first book (scifi novel "Chasing Shadows"), and I'm excited to finding more authors to read. I've loved science fiction and fantasy my whole life, so I'm looking forward to reading through the discussions here. I may end up being a bit of a lurker, but this looks like a great group, and I'm very happy to have joined.
See you around!
Hi everyone,I'm Rhett Bruno, a science fiction author and reader. My debut Scifi novel was recently released, and I'm currently reading "The Expanse" series. Glad to meet you all!
Hi everyone, I'm a science fiction and fantasy fan and only recently self published my first book on Amazon--a 650 page epic sci-fi/fantasy novel. My pen name is J.D. Thomas.I always wanted to write a book someday, but never thought I would be able to finish one.
I love reading books, and listening to audiobooks, also love reading self improvement and motivation genre books.
On my free time, I play RPG games, watch anime, read manga, play guitar, drums, and listen to Thursday, Mae, Making April music.
If anyone wants a copy of the book, I can send one as a Kindle gift through email, or as a PDF whichever you prefer. It could use some feedback, as I am constantly improving it.

Hi, Oliver. Welcome to Goodreads and the group. Since you're just released your first book, you may want to check out the Goodreads Author Program and set up an author account to claim your author page. It will let you add a biography & photo to that page, promote your books with a blog, schedule of events (online and real world), and other tools for connecting with Goodreads readers.

Hi Geezer, thanks for the tip I will do that now. Okay understood about the promotion in more than one area.
Best regards,

Hi Group. I'm a new fantasy/scifi author working on marketing my self-published debut. I'm a big fan of role-playing games, and I'm currently running an old fashioned table-top Star Wars RPG. Being a corporate drone in a monotonous job allows my mind lots of time for wondering and imagining. I also love Philosophy and history (major and minor in college). Looking forward to the interaction here!
Hiya!I'm Kirai, Maria Kirai, and you asked me last year what kind of reader I am I could've given you an answer, but now not really. But my favourites are the Shadowhunter Chronicles, Insignia, Ender's Game, the Jelindel Chronicles, the Five Ancestors, and other similar fantasy and/or sci-fi books.
Hello all. I am David and started reading Science Fiction in 1956 when I found Time for the Stars. I was captured immediately. Grew up with Heinlein, Asimov, E.E.Smith, to Brin, Bear, Gibson, and Card. Sometime around 2000, lost interest in the field and stopped reading.Recently, I came across B.V. Larson and Jack Campbell and liked them both so decided to read more but there are so many books now that I decided to join your group to narrow down choices to only the best of breed.
Thanks, in advance for all of your help. Regards--d

Hi, David, and welcome to both Goodreads and the group. I hope you'll be joining us in some interesting discussions. Looks like you're strictly a sci-fi guy; a lot of us tend to throw fantasy into the mix as well.
I love Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet and spinoff series (and I've also read his older Stark's War books, written under his real name, John Hemry.) On the other hand, I have no love for Larson. So it goes.
Looking at your booklist, which I know you're still fleshing out with old favorites and is probably incomplete, but I think you should add some Scalzi to your diet, if you haven't already tried him, starting with Old Man's War. After all, you have Heinlein, Drake, Campbell and Haldeman military SF. (We had a group discussion of Old Man's War last year.) And if you like Campbell, you might try some of the Honor Harrington space fleet combat stories (e.g. On Basilisk Station), again, if you haven't already tried Weber.

Thanks for your response to my intro. I never heard of Scalzi but I will into this person. I read a lot of David Weber, Alan dean foster, LeGuin, P.J. FArmer, Robert Forward, the Herberts, etc, I do like some fantasy but I found that I like "hard" SF better. Many of the authors I read till I got tired of the style, like the Well Worlds, for example.
That's the reason I want to look at new writers.
I will be following this group, hoping to get some insight into new writers.
Thanks again for your response and looking forward to joining some future book discussions.

If you enjoy Old Man's War, drop us a note in the Old Man's War discussion topic and maybe we'll suggest some Bujold or Steakley to go with it. :)

My name is David and I'm new to the group. I'm also fairly new to fantasy and science fiction. I read some RA Salvatore when I was a teen but had not read any SF&F in about 15 years. I never had anything against the genre, I just read a lot of real history and sports books for a while. Then about four years ago I watched a little show called Game of Thrones. I finished all five books of ASOIAF in between seasons one and two of the show. I also saw a documentary about Arthur C. Clark about 18 months ago so I read Fountains of Paradise, my first science fiction novel ever. So I've been reading almost exclusively sci fi for the last year plus. Really enjoying it. I'm about halfway through Dune at the moment and then I'm going to pick something with knights, dragons and quests.
A big WELCOME to all our new members. Drag up a chair and join the conversation, Jarvis, our robot butler will be along shortly with drinks...I hear he's been working on a raspberry sweet tea that's to die for...
Hi everyone!I stumbled across this group, and as a reader and writer of fantasy and sci-fi I thought I'd come join in!
I pretty much have two types of reading, what I class as silly and sensible. My favourite silly authors include Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Terry Brooks and Martin Millar. Sensible ones are Karen Miller, Fiona McIntosh, Brent Weeks, Patrick Rothfuss, Trudi Canavan and Tolkien, of course :-). Hope to meet some like-minded people and get some good recommendations here!

Hi everyone, I really enjoy sci fi and fantasy, but I lean more towards sci fi. I like most of the classic movies and sci fi related tv shows. But, I also like to watch
Mystery Science Theater 3000, and laugh at really bad movies, Does Plan 9 from outer space ring a bell?
anyways, I am glad to join this group.

Hi, my name is Rike (short form from Frederike, girls name :) ) and I love to read Fantasy and a little bit sci-fi. I live in Vienna, Austria with a wunderfull boyfriend and two cats (more beautiful, less smart). My sci-fi highlights (top-three) would be:
1. Krieg der Klone -(Old mens war) - John Scalzi
2. Blackcollar - Timothy Zahn
3. Imperium der Prinzen (Confusion of Princes) - Garth Nix
My fantasy highlights are - hm easier to chose the authors:
1. Tolkin (of course) - Lord of the rings
2. Garth Nix - Sabriel
3. Richard Schwartz (german author but incredable brilliant)
... really heavy to chose three books. :)
I also love a lot of books of:
Douglas Adams
Anne Bishop
David Eddings
Raymund Feist
Ursula K Le Guinn
Patrick Rothfuss
Brandon Sanderson
and a lot more

Hi everyone,I'm William, and I just joined Goodreads. I'm a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy, especially Frank Herbert's novel Dune. Right now I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov, but Hyperion is next on my list. I can't wait to join the discussions. This sounds like a fun group!
Welcome to both Goodreads and the group, William. Hope you find it useful & entertaining.
Hi everyone - I'm Elaine and I've been a fan of science-fiction in all its forms for as long as I can remember. A few years ago I began writing my own original SF stories, and am about to self-publish my first short story collection. Like William, above, I love the 'Dune' books (haven't revisited them in a while, I must admit). More lately I've been bowled over by Hugh Howey's 'Wool' series, Blake Crouch's 'Wayward Pines' series, and everything by Michael Marshall Smith. Isaac Asimov ('I, Robot' is a favourite book and film), Ray Bradbury, Douglas Adams, Philip K Dick... all favourites too.
I'm a big fan of 'Doctor Who' and 'Torchwood', to name just two of the shows I've enjoyed in recent years. Also enjoy crime stories ('True Detective' most recently, and all the Scandinavian dramas). One of the best films I've seen in recent years was 'District 9' - very dark fare!
I look forward to chatting about our mutual interests!
Hi guys im Niall!I love to read - maybe a little too much - I love my fantasy and i am just starting to get into sci-fi.

Nice to meet everyone!

Hi,I am new here (and on GoodReads). I love sci-fi and fantasy, especially the strager stuff that doesn't fit easily into established categories. I'm a big fan of the work Catherynne Valente, Patricia McKillip and Elizabeth Bear (whom I had the pleasure of meeting recently.
cheers,
Trine

Hi Trine. I'm glad you nommed a Catherynne Valente for Sept, I have her as want-to-explore quite urgently. (I'd have read The Habitation of the Blessed already if I could find it in ebook!!) I loved Elizabeth Bear's Range of Ghosts, look forward to the rest of that trilogy. Also have a copy of Riddle-Master: The Complete Trilogy to read, is that one of hers you'd recommend?
Hi, Ariel here - and yes it was the name I was given at birth! :-) Though a member of Goodreads for some time, this is the first group I have joined.I love all forms of sci-fiction, whether futuristic space, fairy fantasy, end of world... etc. Great fan of Tolkien - books and movies. The weird - Piers Anthony. And I really like young adult science fiction.
After almost 50 years of reading, I am now in the process of writing my own first science fiction novel.

Well hello, Sci-fi is a really new genre i'm knowing, but i love it, and every day i want to read more of this kind of books and authors. I'm a veteran in fantasy, the genre that blows my mind every time i read, since I was a kid.
I hope joining this group turns to be fun and could learn more about this two genders.
I'm not english speaker but i try hard writing correctly, I dont mind to be corrected in my comments.
Nice to meet you all.

Lord of Light
The Martian Chronicles
Foundation
Childhood's End
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Neuromancer
I say "must". Ha! These are just some of my all time favorites. Enjoy!
And I'm fairly positive you're waaay better at English than I am at whatever your native tongue is! :-)
Hi Karina! Welcome from another new member to this group! I too would like to recommend a favourite you might like - I too have loved fantasy books since I was a child. This is a series: The Ancient Future. First book is The Dark Age To see if it is your type of book before buying it - you can download the whole 3 books for free in pdf format from:

The author Traci Harding is Australian and is a member of Goodreads...
Hi everyone, I'm Greg, I'm surprised I didn't know about this group as I'm in about 3 other fantasy groups on Goodreads.Anyways, look forward to seeing what some discussions are about.

Hi Ariel! Nice to meet you.
Thanks for the book recommendation, I will look for it, but sounds interesting. I don't know what is about, but sounds like something with time. I love time travel books hahaha :P!
I will recomend you the book for why I start reading sci-fi: Hyperion - Dan Simmons.
I contend that SF is actually a very old genre. Just saying. I think it has as much to do with myth and legend as it does with scientific speculation although today questions raised by science demand muth to explore.

Hi! everyone. I'm new to the group and Goodreads. I've been a fan of sci-fi/fantasy ever since a friend lent me a copy of the Crystal Shard by R.A. Salvatore. It'sbeen a a joy to find all the books that I loved and read as a kid. They all inspired me to write my own book even (The Saga of Lyn - The Reawakening) I look forward to finding new adventures!

Hi, Joey, and welcome to the group.
We have ample dragon parking in our two specious luxury weyrs located both north and south of the group. These accommodations come complete with complimentary sheep, cows & numb weed. We do ask that dragons not smoke in the group itself (one of our draconian rules.)
Celestial dragons will find a lovely cloud-shrouded mountain peak directly to the east.
We hope you and your dragon enjoy your stay with us.
