Hi again, Stephen. Yes, as the first post in this topic says, we have a Promotions & Advertisements folder. (Also, the "Group Rules" in that annoying yellow pop-up box you see when you start posting will try to point you there.)

In fact, you've already posted about Insolitus there. (And I replied suggesting you also check out the Goodreads Author Program to set up an Author account with Goodreads.)

Tracy Zidon | 4 comments Hello, my name is Tracy. I am a signle mom to two busy children who thankfully are getting to a more independent age (11 and 9) so I can find more time to read :) I am also hoping that they will come to enjoy reading as much as I do. It is still tough to get them to sit down and enjoy a book. I love to read just about anything, but my favorite reads come from the scifi/fantasy realms. I had joined goodreads awhile ago but never really explored the site and hope to get more insight into other good reads out there that I have not uncovered yet.

Matthew Reads Junk (matthewreadsjunk) | 35 comments Hi. I'm Matthew. I've read a s--- ton of Sci-Fi fantasy books. I enjoy the genre, but I'll be the first to admit that alot of what I read is crap.
I checked my reviews over the past few years, and it seems I gave out more 1 & 2 stars vs 3 & 4 stars.
So I'm working on only reading things I want to read, and things I enjoy.
(Erickson, Renyolds, Abercrombie, etc, etc)

Caitlin (cait_coy) Hi, my name is Caitlin. I work at a library so my to-read list is endless and constantly expanding but I'm hoping to get back to reading more sci-fi and fantasy. I grew up reading Anne McCaffrey but missed a lot of the classics in both areas so I'm excited to find some more good reads. Catching up on ASOIAF has kept me pretty busy but I'm kind of glad I didn't start until now so I have a little less of a wait.

Welcome to the group, Caitlin. I'm looking forward to discussing SF/F with you. You've certainly got a good start with Anne McCaffrey. I imagine working in a library might be fun, if all those pesky customers didn't keep interrupting your reading! :)

Juston Fenton Hi All,
Just joined this month and I'm looking forward to being exposed to new SF&F authors that I've not read before. I'm also looking forward to discussing the books of the month. I love to read, and SF&F is probably my preferred genre.

I joined the team over at the group "Beyond Reality" last month and found a few of the members there also enjoyed the company of the "Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy" group too, so I thought I'd join too.

I try to read four to five books a month so between the two groups I should be well covered for a variety of books and enjoyable discussion on the two genres I enjoy the most.

I'm currently reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson which was one of the "Beyond Reality" reads for May.

Cheers all
Juston

Hi, Samantha. Welcome to the group. I hope you'll find some interesting discussions here. You might check out our Recommendations Folder for some member thoughts on good sci-fi and other books, or start a new topic there to ask about specific styles.

I noticed you are currently reading The Night Circus. We had a group discussion of Night Circus some months ago. Why not add your thoughts when you finish reading it? And welcome aboard.

Becky | 1 comments Hello all! I'm Becky, I'm a little embarrassed to admit I've been a lurker in this group since the beginning of the year, but this is my first post. I’m currently working in the Texas chemical industry, and about to start my MS in environmental science in the fall.

My mother handed me a stack of Asimov's short stories when she noticed I had been watching old SF TV reruns with my dad, and 20 years later I've only fallen farther down the rabbit hole since. This group has helped me discover a number of new authors, and I look forward to being better about participating in the discussions.

Damon Caraway (damoncaraway) | 2 comments Hi. I've been reading fantasy since 1981 when I was forced to read the Hobbit (thank you Donnie). I read avidly throughout the 80s and early 90s until college and grad school handed me a new reading list. I just got back on the fantasy horse about three years ago. Recently I've read Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Dan Simmons, Peter F. Hamilton and Steven Erikson and have been wowed by all. I just finished The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson, who is still my favorite but some of the new blood might be contenders. I am currently reading "Consider Phlebas" by Iain M. Banks R.I.P.

Johnathon | 1 comments Hello everyone. my name is John, I just recently joined Goodreads in search of new books to read. I have a wonderful wife and three small and very energetic children. I read when I can but I have a pretty full schedule nowadays. I mostly listen to audio books while doing chores, driving, or any other activity not involving my family. I've always loved fantasy, sci fi , and horror. High fantasy novels are my all time favorite and I joined this group hoping to find some great new novels.

Welcome to both Goodreads and the group, Johnathon. I hope you'll find some time to join in our conversation. Back before I retired, I used to listen to a lot of audiobooks during my daily commute (only some of which were SF/F). Now that I don't have that commute, I have more time to actually read text, and don't do nearly as many audiobooks each year. (Still I managed to justify an Audible subscription.)

Ian Douglas | 3 comments Hi
So I'm new around here. A newcomer to these jungles of words and wits. It's a big group, so not sure where to begin but hoping I can make friends who love Sf and F like me. Any advice or tips gratefully appreciated.
My name's Ian, I live near Sherwood Forest and yes, I write for a living. Although i scribble mostly SF there aren't a lot of SF devotees in my necks of the woods. In fact SF gets looked down on as 'pulp'. So I'm hoping to connect with lovers of Sf, in all shapes and sizes (so if you're a shape shifter you're make my day ).
Anyway pls make my day and say 'hi'.

Midnights | 1 comments Hi. I'm Middy. I've bee lurking around a while. The monthly books seem interesting and I think I'll give those a shot when I'm not in the niddle of making costumes for an anime convention next month. No time to read....
Oh no....the mobile app only lets me see my last three lines of text...please excuse typos.
Anyway, I've been reading sci fi since i was about eight or nine. The classics and stuff. In fifth grade I started reading Anne McCaffrey and since I've read nearly every book, many twice or more. I've never found an author who writes a new world as well as she does, be it Pern, the brainships, talent universe, etc. That's what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure I'll ever find it. Older sci fi is also nice and I've been getting more into it, but it feels like a snob would read it rather than someone who enjoys reading most of the time and the ideas that are presented are no longer new.
I have no idea how long this post is.
I'll probably lurk around a lot, collecting data on what people consider good. Maybe I'll find something new to love.
So, hi!

Midnights wrote: "Hi. I'm Middy. I've bee lurking around a while. The monthly books seem interesting and I think I'll give those a shot when I'm not in the middle of making costumes for an anime convention..."

Hi, Middy, and welcome to the group. Anime Expo, of some other con. (The fact that there's more than one anime convention these days sort of blows my mind, given before '91 there were none.)

Nice to have a SciFi Grandmaster Anne McCaffrey fan aboard. I'm partial to her Pern novels & Crystal Singer. (Have you tried any of Elizabeth Moon's books? E.g. her Vatta's War space opera or Paksenarion fantasy. Moon co-wrote some of the dino-planet space opera books with McCaffrey, and I think it's reflected somewhat in Moon's early worldbuilding style.)

Look forward to chatting with you!

message 644: by Steve (last edited Jun 20, 2014 01:26PM) (new)

Steve Harvey | 2 comments Hi folks. I was a huge sci-fi fan as a kid, particularly of Isaac Asimov (whose non-fiction also provided me with most of my foundation in physics). Young adulthood took me through Eastern Mysticism, east-meets-west stuff ("The Tao of Physics," for example), psychedelic drug experimentation, world travels and adventures, and a general philosophical and imaginative intellectualism. I was increasingly toying with fantasy fiction themes of my own, trying to capture some of this (I had self-identified as "a writer" since early childhood). amazingly, I didn't discover "Lord of the Rings" until I was 20, camping out on the Gulf of Aqaba on the edge of the Sinai Desert, which turned my attention from sci-fi to fantasy.

I focused on reading classics for several years, then became a sociology grad student and lecturer, developing my own fantasy fiction idea at the same time, which I devoted myself to full time while living in a cabin by a stream in Cabestro Canyon in Northern New Mexico and then again a couple of years later while living in Mazatlan, Mexico.

There was a lot of study of classical and world history and mythology mixed in there; comparative mythology (ala Joseph Campbell), and a growing fascination with complex dynamical systems (Chaos Theory), particularly as applied to human history and the human technological and social institutional landscape. All of this coalesced into my own novel, "A Conspiracy of Wizards," in which I tried to distill the essence of our existence into a very novel and innovative fantasy adventure-epic. (While I know this isn't the place to promote my book, it's hard to introduce myself without mentioning it, since it's a big part of who I am and how I relate to the genre.)

While my interests have been eclectic, I have continued to return to fantasy and sci-fi as my own favorite literary garden, having read much of Robert Jordan's series years ago (though I did get tired of it by the fourth or fifth book), and watching "Game of Thrones" on Netflix now.

I'm a lawyer and academic, and really like highly intellectual fantasy and sci-fi, or the intellectual dimensions of it. I think it's a great way to explore the subtleties of our world and universe in the most entertaining and colorful of ways. The human imagination is one of Nature's most impressive of marvels!

Anyway, that's my story (and I'm sticking to it!) Cheers.

-Steve

My name's Sarah and I'm a big fantasy reader and as of just recently a first time author as well. This is my first group on goodreads. I've been looking for a place to get some recommendations on new fantasy series to read, so I'm excited to go check that folder out next.

Matej | 2 comments Hello, I am Mat, and I am primarily interested in Hard SF and Military SF, though I also like a bit of Fantasy here and there. I am currently studying Philosophy at university, with emphasis on the philosophy of mind, and so some of my favourite books tie in with that area. I particularly enjoyed Blindsight by Peter Watts.
