SOLVED Sci-Fi series, a man who either lived on campus or was a teacher on a college campus, he somehow went back in time to either Viking or Celtic Europe [s]

I believe I read it in the late 90's early 2000's, but I think it was possibly written in the 80's.

I don't remember much about it; though I do remember that the main character had a friend who went with him back in time. I believe his friend was happy there and decided to stay, I can't remember if the main character did or not.

I know all that's vague, but any and all suggestions would be welcome.

Could it have been The Complete Compleat Enchanter series by L. Sprague de Camp? The book that I linked is the collected series of books/stories in the series.

If it's Celtic, possibly The Paradise War by Stephen Lawhead. It was first published in 1991. Two Oxford students get pulled into the Celtic Otherworld, and end up as enemies. It's a trilogy.
