Based on the poll, some members would like 2 group reads per month. I will post a 2nd book selection each month. It may be based on a theme, a whim, a runner up, or a suggestion. I hope to select from a wide variety of sub-genres.

Happy Reading!

Jaedlyn ✨ (lepoet_femme) Will we know of this before the 1st? I'm still trying to get the first book we are going to read lol.

Until we get going I think I will wait until later in July to post one ore just make it for August. I Don't want to overwhelm everyone. I'll post it no later than July 15th.

Each selection should be firm by the 15th of the month before so get your August selections ready for a poll. :)

2nd July Book Selection
July 15th-August 15th

True Grit by Charles Portis

I've never read anything by him and haven't read much in this genre. It'll be an adventure. Hope you find this an interesting read.

Connie N. I'll read anything, really. My favorites are chick lit, romance, and cozy mystery. But I'm up for anything.

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) Mysteries; pretty much all the sub genres, the only history I really like is memoirs; "women's fiction - I hesitate to cal it chick lit because the ones I like have older (closer to my age) protagonists, for instance Elizabeth Buchan, Katie Fforde, Jill Mansell, Beth Harbison; some romance; some classics

I think there is definitely a difference between "chic lit" and women's fiction.

Hmm, I have thought of those as interchangeable. Is it the age of the main character that makes the difference?

message 18: by Baqash (new)

Baqash | 106 comments I guess, in my mind, "chic lit" is generally shallower. i think of specifically romance novels when I think of chic lit.

Women's lit, in my mind, might fall into multiple genres. It would have a depth of character and story development not found in "chic lit".

Perhaps the age of the main character is a difference but i don't think so.

Summer Rental by my definition is chic lit. Outlander is women's fiction, historical fiction, scifi/fantasy.

Looking through historical fiction to choose next month's 2nd read. (looking for additional characteristics to appease all who posted preferences)

It's really interesting to pick a book and then find that half of you have already read it. :)

Still looking...

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) I find it interesting the way genre's are being subdivided into smaller and smaller slices... fiction being split into literary and genre, women's fiction and chick lit, now we have young adult and New adult. So many books seem to cross multiple boundaries.

I am sometimes surprised to find a book considered chick lit that I would think of as women's fiction and vice versa. It is also an issue now because author's want to avoid the "chick lit" label because the thought is that it doesn't sell. Chick lit authors have difficulty getting published.

I read pretty widely, however I do have certain things I avoid...not a big fan of historical fiction, particularly not a fan of WWII era books. I will read some historical non-fiction, especially memoirs. I don't read YA in general. Other than that, I am pretty wide open.

You are right. I would like to think that people aren't feeling limited by the divisions.

I read the vast majority of the genres/sub-genres but I still appreciate that they are being differentiated. There are hundreds of books published each year and I just can't keep up with all the ones I would like to read. It makes it easier for me to zero in on books I'd like to read when they are separated.

I'll read anything for a book club but have certain sub-genres/genres I won't read or care for in general. I read them just because I can have someone to discuss it with. I don't have enough readers in my life to do that with me.

I generally dislike fantasy and most sci-fi. I don't read erotica or horror/paranormal with very few exceptions. Same goes with true crime but I'll will read it when it comes from a scientific viewpoint.

I am so glad we aren't living in the dark ages. It's awesome that we live in a society where there is something for everyone. lol

And thank goodness for Goodreads. I used to only read romance and mystery. Now, after seeing recommendations and joining challenges, I've discovered many more genres and subgenres that I really love or like to explore occasionally.

The votes are in for the 2nd selection of the month for August. We have a tie. That means I'll be posting both Cranford and Tallgrass as a selection. You can choose to read one or both. I'll be reading both and will be ready for any discussion. :)

Added a Thanksgiving cozy mystery just for fun this month along with our great selection from our poll. Looking forward to The Case of The Missing Books. Also added a book many of you have already read but i'm currently reading and would like to discuss.

Enjoy!

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) I loved Harold Fry. It is a book that is so much more than what it appears on the surface.
