I'm wondering how both authors and readers on here feel about an author rating their own books. I've rated a couple of mine, but not most. Of course I do like them but it feels kind of weird to rate them myself. Some people have told me I should, some have said not to. Is there any kind of consensus?

Goodreads forced us to rate our books in order to add them a few years back. So some authors are still rating them because they don't realize they don't need to anymore. In my case, I choose not to rate them anymore because it does look unprofessional and it turns off some readers.
I didn't know that you used to have to rate them,Kevis. You learn something new every day!
Ha,ha. Yes, Nick. Things have definitely changed around here for the better, I think.
I must have joined after that. I really enjoy this site and its the primary way I keep up now with what I'm reading.
I agree, Charles. This site is amazing. Looking back on it, I'm not sure how I managed my reading lists before I discovered Goodreads.

The discussion below was started a couple years back and was among the first ones I read that dealt with the issue of rating one's own book. Whilst the discussion Shaun linked to is quite spirited, I find the calmer discussion a little more informing, especially since there is more reader participation.http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...
I'm not a big fan of drama. There's enough of that in real life dealing with real situations. I like my drama in fictional form, in a good read, if you will.
In that case, Charles, I hope you find my drama-free link more to your liking. ;)
Sorry I'm just responding, been pounding out the words for a few stories.It's my opinion that writers should NOT review their books. it comes off as arrogant to me. And then if I read the book and it sucks, the author now becomes deluded in my mind and I refuse to buy from them again.
A lot of varied and fairly strong opinions on this one. Doesn't look like there is a simple answer, though generally most seem against it.
